From being tried at various positions at the start of his career AB de Villiers has come a long way to emerge as one of the greatest players to grace the sport. The South African has been successful in unleashing different unorthodox shots and referred as Mr. 360 for movement at the batting crease. His success story spread into the longer format as well as he has been widely successful with his ability to play at extreme levels; slowest and fastest. The Pretoria born player puts up some brilliance in the field even as a wicket-keeper whenever needed.
As AB de Villiers bids adieu to his 14-year career, we look his achievements in the International cricket:
1 – AB de Villiers holds the record for the fastest fifty, hundred and 150 in ODI cricket. In the 2015 Johannesburg ODI against Windies, he scored his fifty off 16 balls and his hundred in 31 balls which are the fastest in the ODI format. Later in the 2015 CWC, ABD recorded the fastest ODI 150 off 64 balls also against Windies.
11 – De Villiers’s 11 dismissals as a wicket-keeper in the 2013 Johannesburg Test against Pakistan are the joint most for any keeper in a Test match. England’s Jack Russell also made 11 dismissals in the 1995 Test in Johannesburg.
12 – ABD scored fifty-plus scores in 12 consecutive Test matches between 2012 and 2014 which is the joint longest streak for any player. Joe Root also scored fifty-plus in 12 consecutive Tests in 2016-2017.
16 – His 16 sixes in the 149-run knock in the 2015 Johannesburg ODI against Windies are the joint most by any player in an ODI inning. Rohit Sharma and Chris Gayle also hit 16 sixes during their double centuries in this format.
21 – De Villiers scored the joint fastest fifty and joint slowest fifty in the T20I format for South Africa. He scored a fifty off 21 balls against England in 2016 and a 49-ball fifty against the same opposition in 2017.
25 – All the 25 ODI centuries by AB de Villiers came at 100+ strike-rate. No other player scored as many ODI tons at 100 S/R.
37 – ABD’s 37 sixes in the World Cup history are the joint most for any player. He scored those in 22 innings while Chris Gayle also hit 37 sixes in the CWC in 26 innings.
63.94 – AB de Villiers’ ODI batting average of 63.94 as a captain is the best for any player with 3000 runs. He scored 4796 runs in 98 innings with 13 hundreds and 27 fifties.
75 – De Villiers’ 75-ball hundred in the 2010 Centurion Test match against India is the fastest Test century for South Africa. He also hit five of South Africa’s six fastest tons in the ODI format.
78 – Number of innings in Test cricket for AB de Villiers before his first duck. He holds the record for most innings before first duck in this format.
98 – Number of consecutive Test matches of South Africa De Villiers featured since his debut. Only Brendon McCullum (101) featured in more matches for his team since his Test debut.
1207 – AB de Villiers’ 1207 runs in the World Cups are the most for South Africa and the 5th most by any player. His batting average of 63.53 in the tournament is also the highest for any player. (Min: 15 innings)
1672 – De Villiers’ T20I runs for South Africa are the 2nd most by any player for his team. JP Duminy scored 1700 runs in this format for the Saffers.
9427 – Runs ABD scored for South Africa in the ODI format. These are the 2nd most runs by any player in ODIs for South Africa behind Jacques Kallis’ 11550 runs.
19864 – AB de Villiers’ 19864 International runs for South Africa are 2nd most for his country after 25422 runs by Kallis.
