With the reports of match-fixing allegations doing the rounds in the Pakistan Super League (PSL), 33-year-old pacer Mohammad Irfan is the latest name in the hat along with his Pakistan teammates Sharjeel Khan and Khalid Latif. The PCB Anti-Corruption Unit swung into action after they learnt about a possibility of an international syndicate working its way to corrupt the PSL.
A day after Sharjeel and Khalid were provisionally suspended reports from various sources suggest that Irfan’s phone has been seized by the PCB’s anti-corruption unit while Najam Sethi, the PSL chief will be taking a longer and harder look into this matter. This PCB ACU is also backed by the ICC’s ACU, that has been effective in dealing with spot-fixing in the past.
Earlier after the two players were suspended PSL Chairman Najam Sethi had said, “It would not be appropriate to comment on the specifics of the case, however this investigation is a clear demonstration of our determination to drive corruption out of our sports. We will not tolerate any form of corrupt activity and as this investigation proceeds we will not hesitate to take further decisive action as appropriate.”
“The investigation of the PCB anti-corruption unit backed by the ICC ACU has been effectively in dealing with this case to date and we will continue to work in the closest collaboration as the investigation proceeds. We are all absolutely committed to relentlessly pursuing anyone who would seek to damage the integrity of our sports.”
