The Jamaica Tallawahs met the Trinbago Knight Riders in the 7th match of CPL 2016 at Port of Spain. It was expected to be an interesting game as the Tallawahs batting looked in superb form especially after the big man Chris Gayle hit a half-century in the first game. Knights, on the other hand, needed to win this one desperately since they would otherwise sink low in the points table having played four matches. TKR did its best to post 191 but Gayle storm struck them hard and he single-handedly took his team home with 7 wickets in hand.
Chris Gayle didn’t have the best of IPLs and the 36-year old would have wanted to make a point early into the CPL. Chasing 192 to win, he took his time early on and after playing five dot balls in the first over hit the last for a boundary. The next over that he faced off Sunil Narine was a silent one as well. He had the intent but didn’t go all guns blazing and collected one boundary, one six at a time; it looked like he had set a prize on his wicket.
The cautious approach lasted until the half-way stage. Come the 11th over and there was no stopping him. He deposited Scantlebury-Searles for two sixes and a four; the following over from Cooper was pretty similar yielding him 17 runs and on both occasions, he made sure he had the strike for the next over. The 13th over is usually considered the turning point in a T20 game and it was Sulieman Benn who was bowling it for the Knight Riders. Gayle ruthlessly took him apart and four 6s in that over.
It was a chanceless inning until he got out on 94 but turned Beaton had bowled a big no ball and Gayle was back to the middle. He didn’t take time and hit the very next ball, a free hit for a massive one over long on to register his 18th T20 century, third in the CPL. Chris Gayle remained unbeaten on 108 at the end with 11 sixes 6 fours.

What was different in this knock was that he wanted to last the duration, he wanted to see his team through the chase and did so as Tallawahs overhauled the target in 18.2 overs to win the match with 7 wickets and 10 balls in hand.
