India’s swashbuckling batsman Shreyas Iyer has been away from the game of cricket for quite some time now. The 26-year-old succumbed to a shoulder injury while fielding in the first One Day International of the three-match series against England in March 2021. The injury was pretty bad and Shreyas Iyer was asked to undergo surgery.
The same resulted in the batsman getting ruled out of the rest of the ODI series followed by the now-postponed 14th edition of the Indian Premier League (IPL). Iyer was supposed to captain the runners-up of IPL 2020, Delhi Capitals (DC). In the absence of Iyer, young wicketkeeper-batsman Rishabh Pant led the Capitals.
Though Iyer wasn’t present with DC, he made sure to cheer for the team from outside. Since his injury, Shreyas has been quite active on social media and has been entertaining the fans with his humor and witty side. On Tuesday, May 11, the batsman again took to his official Instagram handle to post a hilarious video.
The short clip is from a match when Iyer was playing for India as he can be seen donning the Indian colors. In the funny video, Iyer was fielding in the deep while some Indian fans were cheering for him with the chant, “1 rupee ki Pepsi Iyer Bhai sexy,”
Iyer shared the video with the caption, “Found my new favorite chant #soundon. Can’t wait to get back!”

In case Shreyas Iyer was available, he would have been the automatic choice for captaincy: BCCI Source
Meanwhile, it is learned that BCCI is thinking on the lines of making Shreyas Iyer the captain of the Indian side during the Sri Lanka tour if he is fit for selection. India B will be playing a three-match ODI and T20I series against Sri Lanka in July in the absence of players like Virat Kohli, Rohit Sharma, Jasprit Bumrah, KL Rahul, and Mohammed Shami.
“It is still not clear if Shreyas will recover fully and will be match-fit in time for the tour of Sri Lanka. Normally, a surgery of this scale along with rest, extensive rehab, and training to get back in shape takes around four months. In case Shreyas was available, he would have been the automatic choice for captaincy,” a senior BCCI source privy to selection matters said to the Times of India on conditions of anonymity.
