Lahiru Thirimanne’s T20I career is as good as over. Even though he made his T20I debut for Sri Lanka almost 9 years ago, the left-hander has only played 26 T20Is for his country. In fact, the last time the 31-year-old played a T20I match for Sri Lanka was in the year 2016.

Thirimanne has a very poor record in T20I cricket. In the 26 matches that he has played, he has scored only 291 runs and averages an underwhelming 16.17. His strike rate too is very ordinary at 108.99. However, he is still a part of the Sri Lankan Test team and has a lot to offer to Sri Lankan cricket in the whites.

In fact, he has been in splendid form in 2021 in Test cricket. In the 13 innings that he has played this year for his country in the longest format of the game, Thirimanne has plundered 659 runs at an average of 50.69. While he still has a bleak chance to break into the Sri Lanka ODI side, it is unlikely that he will play another T20I for Sri Lanka. So, the left-hander can retire from the T20I format of the game.
