Emotions are an integral part of cricket, just the way it is a part of every sport. Sachin Tendulkar felt the emotions when he picked up the player of the tournament award in 2003 as the trophy he really wanted to lift remained far away from him. To see him eventually get there in 2011, well that triggered a different set of emotions. The sport is now bigger and better than ever before, thus motivating more kids to pick up the bat or the ball and make a living out of it. If not for these overwhelming emotions, the good ones and the bad ones, we wouldn’t be celebrating the lives of so many of these cricketers we have today. Here are some heartbreaking pictures of cricket that made us cry: 10. Andrew Symonds died in a horrible car accident Andrew Symonds. (Source - Twitter/X) Former Australia all-rounder Andrew Symonds succumbed to a horrible car crash in Queensland in May 2022. The two-time World Cup winner’s car rolled down the road and toppled over an embankment near Townsville. The stalwart died aged 46 and the cricketing world went into a mourning state with tributes flowing from all corners of the globe. 9. Rishabh Pant’s spine-chilling car accident Rishabh Pant. (Source - Twitter/X) The New Year 2023 was a disastrous one for the star India wicket-keeper batter Rishabh Pant. The southpaw was traveling to his hometown in Uttarakhand when his car collided with the divider before catching fire. Pant managed to get out of the burning vehicle with the help of locals and had sustained gruesome injuries which kept him out of action for almost two years. 8. MS Dhoni’s run-out in the 2019 World Cup semifinal MS Dhoni Run-Out 2019 World Cup (Source: Twitter) India had a dream run in the 2019 World Cup winning seven out of eight games to face New Zealand in the semi-final. In the match that went to a reserve day due to rain, India were to chase just 240 runs to reach the finals. After the top-order collapse and Ravindra Jadeja’s 77 off 59, India needed 32 runs in 13 balls with Dhoni as the last recognised batter at the crease. As things stand out, he was dismissed on the third ball of the 49th over, courtesy, of a direct throw from Martin Guptill as Indian fans wept from the stadium and back home with Dhoni walking in despair exuding emotions he had never shown before on the field. 7. (Photo Source: Twitter) They defeated India and Sri Lanka to reach the Asia Cup finals for the first time and it seemed like the fairytale for Bangladesh was about to have a sensational ending. The fans cued up in huge numbers, including the Prime Minister and all prominent celebrities in the country were present in Dhaka to see Pakistan lock horns with the hosts in the 2012 Asia Cup finals. Bangladesh were chasing 237 runs in the second innings and half-centuries from Shakib Al Hasan and Tamim Iqbal seemed enough to take them home. But unfortunately, the middle order fell apart. And with four runs to get off the final over, Aizaz Cheema gave just one run away as Pakistan emerged victorious by two runs and the whole stadium was flooding in tears, including the dressing room. 6. Carlos Brathwaite’s golden chance goes in vain Carlos Brathwaite. (Photo by Gareth Copley-ICC/ICC via Getty Images) Most recent of them all and perhaps one of the most heartbreaking of them all, Carlos Brathwaite nearly produced a moment of a lifetime for the West Indies, but as Ian Bishop said in the commentary box, his dream was diminished by the brilliance of Trent Boult on the boundary rope. Chasing 292 runs, Windies were left frustrated at 164/7 and it seemed like the Kiwis will pull off an easy win. But Carlos Brathwaite scored the first hundred of his ODI career and they needed just six runs in seven balls to pull off the most sensational victory in West Indies’ history. But Brathwaite’s big shot, which was about to clear the rope, saw Boult pluck it on the boundary and seal a five-run win for the Blackcaps. 5. An abysmal run out ends South Africa’s 1999 World Cup aspirations Allan Donald. (Photo Source: Twitter) The stage was well set for South Africa to perhaps win their first ever World Cup. Some outstanding bowling from Alan Donald and Shaun Pollock in the first innings and two gritty knocks from Jacques Kallis and Jonty Rhodes seemed enough for South Africa to win the semifinal against Australia in Birmingham. It all came down to Lance Klusener in the final over, who hit two boundaries off the first two balls and the equation was down to one run in four balls with one wicket remaining. Off the fourth ball, Klusener and Alan Donald had a horrible miscommunication while running and it ended with the match ending in a tie. Australia eventually won the game due to their superior finish in the group stages. 4. South Africa’s semifinal exit in the World Cup 2015 AB de Villiers. (Photo by Gareth Copley/Getty Images) South Africa and World Cup semifinals is perhaps one of the most horrible love stories in cricket and nothing backs my point better than the 2015 semifinal. They had a big total on board batting first, they had some chances to pick big wickets and finish the game early, but it all went in vain as the equation came down to five needed in two balls. Grant Elliot hit a six off Dale Steyn to send New Zealand into the finals, leaving South Africans all across the globe inconsolable. As AB de Villiers and many others from that game said, later on, it was the most heartbreaking moment of their careers. It is still one of the most emotional moments on the field for every cricket fan as one felt South Africa deserved to go all the way in that tournament. 3. It seemed like the stage was set wonderfully for them to go all the way and win the tournament, but they had the biggest obstacle in Australia preventing that from happening. Steve Smith’s blazing century took Australia to a huge total and the mountain eventually was too steep for the Indians to climb. MS Dhoni fought valiantly with a half-century, but it was too little too late. The Indian fans who occupied more than 50% of the SCG that day were left devastated. MS Dhoni capped off that horrendous day with a teary appearance in the post-match presentation, an image which not many can forget for a lifetime. 2. Phillip Hughes’ coffin being carried by his father and Aaron Finch There’s nothing more devastating than death, just the finality of it is so heartbreaking. Phillip Hughes, a 26-year-old promising youngster who was trying to replace Michael Clarke in the Australian squad through the Sheffield Shield game, was batting on 63 when a deathly bouncer hit his neck and two days later, it took his life. The cricketing world was never left so heartbroken as that. So many games were called off right after his passing and the Test series between India and Australia too was postponed for a few days. But the moment which literally left everyone weeping was Aaron Finch and Greg Hughes (Phillip’s father) carrying his coffin for one final time. They both couldn’t control their emotions and cried their heart out, so did the entire world watching it. 1. Tendulkar’s final moment on the pitch Sachin Tendulkar – the god of Indian cricket, the pioneer of cricket’s global growth and arguably the greatest batsman of all time, his departure was obviously going to be very emotional. The cricketing world paused from November 14th to 16th 2013 to say goodbye to the great man in Mumbai. India won the game convincingly in three days and the fans got to see a fifty from the master blaster in his final innings. After the game, as he walked off the pitch through the guard of honor formed by the Indian players, he was left in tears and so were millions across the globe. The moment he came to take blessings from the pitch for one final time was one which remains fresh in many memories.
