5. An abysmal run out ends South Africa’s 1999 World Cup aspirations
The stage was well set for South Africa to perhaps win their first ever World Cup. Some outstanding bowling from Alan Donald and Shaun Pollock in the first innings and two gritty knocks from Jacques Kallis and Jonty Rhodes seemed enough for South Africa to win the semifinal against Australia in Birmingham.
It all came down to Lance Klusener in the final over, who hit two boundaries off the first two balls and the equation was down to one run in four balls with one wicket remaining.
Off the fourth ball, Klusener and Alan Donald had a horrible miscommunication while running and it ended with the match ending in a tie. Australia eventually won the game due to their superior finish in the group stages.
