5. Manish Pandey at the receiving end of Dhoni’s wrath

On a rare instance, ‘Captain Cool’ lost his calmness and hurled down an expletive towards the non-striker, Manish Pandey. This incident happened during the second T20I in Centurion on the tour to South Africa in 2018. In the last over of India’s innings, Pandey completed a single but Dhoni wanted to come back for a double.

While Dhoni wanted to return for a couple, Pandey was ball-watching and didn’t look at his partner at the other end. Dhoni seemed to be furious and send down a mouthful towards Pandey. The former skipper was caught saying, “Oye bh******, idhar dekh le, udhar dekh rha hai.” In the end, he said, “apna ho gaya bas.” This means, “Look here, what are you looking there?” After taking the single Manish was on the non-striker end, but Dhoni expected him to focus on the running and calling from his partner.

This unusual facet of Dhoni was on full tilt display last year in the IPL against Rajasthan Royals. In the last over of CSK’s chase, the umpire signalled a no-ball but then rescinded his call. Dhoni was livid with the umpire and stormed onto the field! Eventually, CSK won the game courtesy a Mitchell Santner six, but Dhoni proved everyone, for even a few seconds, he could lose his composure.
