10 Indian cricket stars and their business involvements: Cricketers retire at a pretty young while they are in their 30’s considering the average retirement age. Despite the fact that they earn big while being professional cricketers, how do they manage their living post retirement? Business and getting involved in ventures or investing in a prospective sector has been the trend that Indian cricketers have followed. From owning hotels to teams in football and tennis leagues, Indian players have their investments spread across industries. Some of them have been successful while a few had had bitter experiences. Here is the list of 10 Indian cricket stars and their business involvements: 1. Sachin Tendulkar: Sachin Tendulkar. He became partners with famous hotelier Sanjay Narang of Mars Group and began his restaurant named Tendulkar’s and cafe named Sachin’s in Mumbai. After calling off his restaurant business a few years back, Sachin, along with PVP Ventures, bagged the Kochi franchise – Kerala Blasters to become a co-owner of a soccer side in ISL. Tendulkar is also the co-owner of the Mumbai franchise of the newly formed International Tennis Premier League (ITPL) along with the Hyderabad-based PVP ventures as he has been a long-time tennis fan. (© Getty Images) The god of off-side was born in one of the richest families in the Kolkata, so it is quite understandable that business runs in his blood and he has proved it in many ways. Sourav Ganguly Enterprises Private Limited run by Ganguly family, where Sourav Ganguly, Nirupa Ganguly and Dona Ganguly are the directors of this company. He began four storey restaurants Sourav’s in Kolkata only to shut it down in 2011. Recently now he is the co-owner of Atletico de Kolkata, the Kolkata-based franchise in ISL. 3. Virender Sehwag: Virender Sehwag. (Photo Source: Associated Press ) Following the footsteps of Sachin and Sourav here as well, cricketer Virender Sehwag also had his go with the restaurant business with Sehwag Favourite in Delhi which also shut down. Pivoting, Sehwag has now started the Sehwag International School foraying into education. After his retirement, Sehwag will now have more business involvements. 4. Zaheer Khan: Zaheer Khan. Hence, that proved as his restaurant ZK’s started in Pune in 2005 still stands tall, also receiving a 3.5 rating on TripAdvisor for its food, quality and service. Learning from the lack of scalability of Tendulkar and Ganguly’s businesses, ZK’s was also planning on opening its outlets in other cities of India as a move to go past the image of being a standalone single restaurant. 5. Harbhajan Singh: (Photo Source: Harbhajan Singh Twitter Handle) After taking hat-trick wickets in Test, spinner Harbhajan Singh again made history in Indian cricket by selling the license rights to his name as a brand to Franchise India Holdings Ltd in 2009. As a strategic move, the company decided to underplay Harbhajan’s name while starting the chain of restaurants – Bhajji Da Dhaba by only using Bhajji as a ‘just another’ nickname for any Sikh. 6. Kapil Dev: Kapil Dev. (© Getty Images) India’s 1983 World Cup winning captain started Kapil Dev’s Eleven which is still going strong since 2006. It is a chain of restaurants in Chandigarh and Patna. This restaurant also launched lounge bar to prosper the business. Kapil Dev also runs a floodlights installation company Dev Musco Lighting Pvt Limited. Recently he has invested $3 million in series a funding in the Indian Trading League (ITL), launched by Samco Ventures along with London-based Bay Capital Founder Siddharth Mehta and others. 7. Recently, he also bought a stake in the Mumbai franchise of Indian Badminton League. By virtue of its founder being a sportsman himself, the company has lasted by keeping itself updated with the changing trends in the business of player management. 8. Anil Kumble: Anil Kumble. (© Getty Images) Anil Kumble’s “TENVIC” is an academy which mentors sports talents through schools across the country started in 2010. The academy is committed to encouraging sports at the grassroots level and the Spin Stars contest is a part of this commitment. The former Indian Test captain graduated B.E from Rashtreeya Vidyalaya College of Engineering (RVCE) in Mechanical Engineering. 9. Mahendra Singh Dhoni: MS Dhoni. Dhoni is venturing into the business of fitness along with his business manager Arun Pandey. Through the company SportsFit World Pvt Ltd, they plan to invest around Rs 2,000 crore in the next five years opening around 200 fitness centres in India, Australia, Middle East, Singapore and the UK. Apart from that he has plans to open his own sports academy in Bihar. Dhoni also owns the Mahi Racing Team India in the Supersport World Championship and the Indian skipper bought a stake in ISL’s Chennaiyin FC and then went on to become the co-owner of Hockey India League’s Ranchi Rays. Recently after CSK was banned by the SC, the buzz was that he has shown interest in buying IPL team as well. 10. Virat Kohli: Virat Kohli. At a very young age, Kohli already has more than a couple of big investments that have the potential of turning million into billions for him. He owns a stake in the ICL franchise Goa FC, is also set to own chain of gym and fitness centres by the brand name ‘Chisel’ which plans to launch 75 centres in the next 3 years.
