10 Indian First Class and IPL cricketers banned for fixing

Over the last decade, if there has been a cricket tournament that has seen its popularity grow manifold, then it has been the Indian Premier League (IPL). The premier T20 league of the world features the biggest international stars. The domestic stars of the Indian cricket circuit rub shoulders with these stars and get the feel of international cricket. The tournament has managed to garner a lot of attention for the glitz and glamour that it has. For the young Indian players, it has served as the breeding ground. But, as the adage goes, with all good things come a few drawbacks too. The IPL has not been away from controversies. Among the controversies that has surrounded the tournament thus far, the ones that stand out among the rest is the spot fixing issue. Cases of spot fixing have brought a lot on infamy to the tournament. It is also a matter of utmost shame that a few players let the greed of money go over their passion for the game. Here we pick a list of 10 Indian players who have been banned for spot fixing and match fixing in the history of the IPL thus far. While the name of S Sreesanth stands prominent, here are 10 other domestic names that will surprise you. Read on to know more: 1. TP Sudhindra (Deccan Chargers) TP Sudhindra. (Photo Source: India Today) When the BCCI cracked the whip on 5 players for spot fixing during the IPL 2012, it was TP Sudhindra who was the worst hit. He was banned for life. It was a television sting operation that had seen him agree to shadowy deals with the apparent bookmakers for fixing the matches in the season. The Deccan Chargers player was previously associated with the Delhi Giants team in the Indian Cricket League (ICL). He played a prolific part in helping Madhya Pradesh gain promotion in the Ranji Trophy elite Division during the 2010-11 season. He was the highest wicket taker of the Ranji 2011-12 season and that ad fetched him the big deal with the Deccan Chargers. 2. But the middle-order batsman ended up falling prey to the television sting operation where he was seen conceding to murky deals with the bookies. In the domestic circuit, Mishra was associated with the Madhya Pradesh team. He was also a part of the Delhi Giants team in the ICL. Mishra was signed by the Deccan Chargers in the year 2010. Later, in the 2011 season, it was the Pune Warriors India that signed him for the season. 3. Amit Yadav (Kings XI Punjab) Amit Yadav. (Photo Source: Twitter) Young and fresh Amit Yadav was a breakthrough bowler who appeared in the Goan cricket circuit about a decade ago. Sheer pace and the ability to get the bounce from the track made Amit Yadav a special talent. Amit fetched himself an IPL contract with the Kings XI Punjab franchise. However, when two news reporters impersonated as members of a sports agency and made illegal offers to him in the year 2012, he reportedly fell prey to the trap. He did not report the issue to the concerned officials and was subsequently banned by the BCCI for a year. However, he made a comeback to First Class cricket (Ranji Trophy) and featured for Goa in 2016 edition as well. He has 120 wickets to his name in 35 matches. 4. Abhinav Bali (Kings XI Punjab and Himachal Pradesh) Abhinav Bali. (Photo Source: Navbharat Times) Abhinav Bali had just started to settle at the big stage when he fell into the match fixing trap. After having played for Delhi and Himachal Pradesh in the domestic cricket, Bali found himself in the Kings XI Punjab IPL squad. He had earlier played for the Delhi Giants franchise in the now-defunct Indian Cricket League (ICL). Bali was found guilty of match fixing and spot fixing by the ACU of the BCCI. He was banned for one year after the tournament concluded in the year 2012. Much like the other cricketers who were caught up with him, Abhinav Bali was found guilty of not reporting the approaches made to him by the bookies. 5. Shalabh Srivastava (Kings XI Punjab) Shalabh Srivastava. (Photo Source: Getty Images) Promising fast bowler Shalabh Srivastava had made a name for himself whilst playing for the Kings XI Punjab in the initial years of the IPL. He was a key member of the team. It was during the crackdown of the premier tournament in 2012 that saw a couple of reporters expose as many as five players being involved in unscrupulous practices. Shalabh was banned for five years. Shalabh maintained that he did nothing wrong and appealed against the verdict of the BCCI. The BCCI disciplinary committee itself admitted that there was “no evidence of actual match fixing or money changing hands in his case”, but held him guilty of ” grave misconduct and misdemeanour in as much as speaking to an unauthorised person and not reporting to the BCCI”. 6. Ankeet Chavan (Rajasthan Royals) Ankeet Chavan backed up by MCA, ask BCCI to lift life-ban. (Photo Source: AFP) The cricket career of Mumbai spinner Ankeet Chavan looked set for a merry ride. He was slowly rising up the ranks in the Mumbai cricket circuit. In the IPL, the Rajasthan Royals showed great faith in him and handed him key responsibilities in the team. Unfortunately, though, the left arm spinner ended up being caught in the IPL 2013 spot fixing scandal with S Sreesanth and Ajit Chandila. He pleaded innocent in front of the court and investigation officers but in vain. The BCCI had zero tolerance in his case too and they decided to impose a life ban in him. 7. Amit Singh (Rajasthan Royals) Amit Singh. (Photo Source: Twitter) Speedster Amit Singh had made big news with a brilliant spell of fast bowling in IPL 2009. He had rocked the Royal Challengers Bangalore lineup with a four-wicket haul. Soon, the name was lost in the crowd and Singh turned into a bookie. He was caught in the spot fixing scandal and was slapped a five year ban by the BCCI. The reports suggested that Amit Singh acted as the middleman between the players and the bookies. Apparently, he was the ‘talent spotter’ for the bookies as he often picked the players who were vulnerable to concede in for match fixing offers. He was one of the 11 bookies arrested in the infamous spot fixing scandal. 8. Ajit Chandila (Rajasthan Royals) (Photo Source: Twitter) Rajasthan Royals cricketer Ajit Chandila was one among the three prominent faces in the IPL 2013 to have been caught in the spot fixing scandal. Chandila had been a promising talent for RR in the season. He was often handed the responsibility of bowling in the powerplays during the season. In fact, in the 2012 edition, Chandila had even bagged a hat-trick in a fixture against the Pune Warriors India. He was held guilty of misconduct and corruption by the Anti-Corruption Unit of the BCCI. He had reportedly bowled no balls at will and gave away runs. He was handed a life ban. 9. S Sreesanth, Ajit Chandila, and Ankeet Chavan, were the three big names that made the headlines for the wrong reasons. While these three had to face the axe from the BCCI, another promising cricketer – Siddharth Trivedi – also endured some damage. Trivedi was found guilty of being approached by the bookies and for not having reported the issue to the IPL governing council. He was handed a one year ban by the BCCI. The 103-T20 matches veteran has not played any competitive registered match since March 2015. 10. Hiken Shah (Mumbai) Mumbai cricketer Hiken Shah suspended by the BCCI for match-fixing in the IPL. (Photo Source: Fotocorp) Hiken Shah emerged in the Mumbai cricket circuit in the year 2007. The team needed youngsters to step up in the season and Shah proved to be the one. He scored a century in his very second game. With time, his form dwindled and so did his fortunes. Hiken was banned for five years by the BCCI for making illegal approaches to players in the IPL and domestic cricket. Some reports in the Hindustan Times had suggested that Shah had allegedly approached Pravin Tambe for match fixing. Tambe, a player in Mumbai and Rajasthan Royals, reported the issue to the IPL governing body. The Anti-Corruption unit of the BCCI took action subsequently.
