10 Shameful incidents that put the game to disgrace
A few of these incidents are still being talked about.
10. Monkeygate Scandal in Sydney
The Sydney Test was controversial for more than one reason. Australia controversially won the game with only an over and a bit left to end the day’s play. Anil Kumble, the then Indian captain, skipped the presentation ceremony to mark the visiting team’s protest against the shoddy umpiring. Mark Benson and Bucknor were removed as the umpires for the rest of the series on BCCI‘s insistence.
However, after the match Andrew Symonds left everyone stunned by accusing Harbhajan Singh of raclially abusing him during the Test match. Symonds claimed that Bhajji hurled a racial slur at him when he was batting with Sachin Tendulkar. Accordingly, the Match referee charged Harbhajan with Level 3 offence and banned him for three Tests.
India then threatened to quit the tour after what had transpired on tour already. The hearing went on for around a month before the ban on Harbhajan was lifted as Australia’s accusation wasn’t proved. However, he was fined 50% of his match fee for using abusive language.
