It was the third ODI of the tri-series between India and Sri Lanka with New Zealand being the other team in 2010. Chasing 171, India were on the cusp of the victory thanks to Virender Sehwag‘s scintillating knock who was unbeaten on 99. With only one run needed to win in the 35th over, many were anticipating Sehwag to complete his century. However, Suraj Randiv, bowled a huge no-ball to deny him the hundred.

Though Sehwag hit that delivery for a six, India needed only a run to win and the extra run was counted first which led to the batsman staying unbeaten on 99. This created furore all over and eventually, Randiv admitted that he deliberately bowled a no-ball to deny a ton to the opposition batsman. Moreover, it was revealed that the senior player Tillakaratne Dilshan had instigated him to do the same.

Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC) wasn’t happy at all with these actions from the players as it tarnished the country’s reputation and was also against the spirit of the game. The board suspended Randiv for one match and also fined his 100% match fee for his actions while Dilshan was also fined his match fee. The then Sri Lankan captain Kumar Sangakkara also apologised on behalf of the team for the unfortunate incident.
