Australian captain Steve Smith is in fabulous form and is scoring centuries after centuries in Test cricket. At the age of 27 Smith already has 20 centuries to his name and with the amount of time he has ahead of him, Smith is in contention to break a lot of records that seem to be unreachable for many.
Brad Hodge, a former Australian player, and a T20 specialist feels the same. Recently Hodge while talking to Fox Sports appreciated the current Australian skipper. He said that getting to 20 Test tons is not easy and he has already done that. Speaking of batting technique Smith is totally different and Hodge agrees on this.
The former Australian cricketer said, “To reach 20 Test (hundreds) takes a helluva lot of effort and skill, He’s done that and he’s probably just going to go on. He’s got time on his side, he’s batting as best as he possibly could. Technically, he’s just completely different to what we know.”
He was just praising Smith in and out. Although it is due, Hodge also said that the Australian is leading the way from the front and showing everyone how it is done. “He’s just leading from the front, it’s what a captain of Australia is meant to do. He’s batting superbly and just showing the boys: ‘this is how you play.’ It’s amazing, isn’t it?” Hodge added.
Steve Smith has been doing an impeccable job as a captain too and playing well with that burden is not at all easy. Coming to India and scoring three centuries is just fantastic. He is surely one of the greats of the game in making and Hodge agrees to this as well.
“He was thrust in there as captain quite early and it’s not a simple job, to lead the Australian cricket team. But to perform the way he has with the bat, not only in Test match cricket but one-day cricket for Australia he’s led the way. Just supreme batsmanship, the craftsmanship of his skill is just immense,” said Hodge.
He went on make a huge statement as he said, Smith could get 40-50 tons in Test cricket. Hodge who has 51 first-class centuries had some reason to say that. Brad surely sees something special in Smith and the 27-year-old is proving him right. The former Australian batsman said that Smith will surely get to the likes of Ricky Ponting and Sachin Tendulkar.
“He could do 40 or 50 if he’s good enough — and I think that he is if he keeps churning them out like this. I can’t see why not. He’s probably going at one (century) in (every) three (Tests) at the moment so if he keeps playing till he’s 35 — some of us play till we’re 42, so time’s on his side. Forty or 50 is not out of reach, I don’t reckon…He’s a superstar. I think he’ll go on to close down the likes of Sachin Tendulkar, Ricky Ponting.” Hodge concluded.
