13 Facts about Aaron Finch – The destructive Aussie: A beefy, aggressive batsman, Aaron Finch is one of the many swashbuckling openers Australia has produced over the years. Finch can be considered as a limited overs specialist. Although, he initially struggled to maintain his place in the Australian cricket team, he stabilized his performances and became one of the most important batsmen for Australia in limited overs format. His international career might have been little bumpy so far, but Finch surely can improve it in the near future.

His strength remains his ability to strike the ball hard and score at a brisk pace. He has been an asset for his team because of his habit of providing healthy starts. Currently, he is one of the most exciting batsmen in limited overs cricket.

1. Birth:

Aaron James Finch was born on 17 November 1986 in the country town of Colac, Victoria.

2. Early days:

Like many Australians, Finch used to play Australian rules football as a young boy.

3. A wicket keeper initially:

He was initially a wicket-keeper batsman but soon turned into a top order batsman.

4. Under-19 cricket:

Aaron Finch represented Australia in the 2006 under-19 World Cup.

5. First-class debut:

At the age of 21, Finch made his first-class debut for Victoria against India at Junction Oval, Melbourne. It was a tour game for India ahead of the Boxing Day Test.

6. T20I debut:

On his T20I debut, Aaron Finch batted in the middle order and scored an unbeaten 15 against England at Adelaide on 12th January 2011, unfortunately, Australia conceded that game.

7. ODI debut:

Almost exactly two years later, Finch got the opportunity to make his ODI debut on 11th January 2013 versus Sri Lanka at Melbourne, he could not leave an impression as he got out after scoring just 16.

8. T20 specialist:

Aaron Finch entered the history books when on 29 August 2013 England, he scored a magnificent 156 off 63 balls. This feat is currently recorded as the highest individual score in a Twenty20 International cricket.

9. World Cup debut:

Finch was selected as a part of Australia’s 2015 Cricket World Cup squad. In Australia’s first group match against England, which was also Finch’s World Cup debut. He top scored with 135 runs, helping Australia to win by a margin of 111 runs against their arch-rivals. He was adjudged as the man of the match for his memorable performance.

10. Playing with legends:

In July 2014, he played for the MCC side in the Bicentenary Celebration match at Lord’s along with legends like Sachin Tendulkar, Rahul Dravid and Brian Lara. Finch had the best score in the game as he remained unbeaten on 181. The MCC XI won the match by 7 wickets.

11. Waiting for the Baggy Green:

Despite being a important limited overs cricketer for Australia, Aaron Finch is yet to make his Test debut for his country.

12. Lack of consistency:

Aaron Finch has lost out his chances most of the times due to his inconsistent performance. After his T20I debut, he had to wait another one year for next opportunity and could only secure a permanent place in the squad in the year 2013. Similarly, his ODI debut series and the following one against West Indies were also disappointing.

13. Teams:

Along with Australia Aaron Finch plays for numerous teams. He currently represents Mumbai Indians in IPL, Melbourne Renegades in BBL, Yorkshire County Cricket Club and Victoria in Sheffield Shield.
