17-year-old Jemimah Rodrigues smashes a double ton in the Women's U19 50-over tournament

The promising Mumbai Under-19 Women Cricketer Jemimah Rodrigues wreck havoc with her marathon innings in the ongoing Inter-State One-Day Competition for Under-19 Women. On Sunday, she scored an unbeaten 202 in the 50-over game against Saurashtra. Earlier in the first game of the tournament, Jemimah had scored 178 against Gujarat and now stands as the leading run-getter with 397 runs in only three innings.

In their 3rd game played at the Aurangabad’s District Cricket Association Stadium, Mumbai elected to bat first. Their captain put on a huge 300-run stand with SK Raut for the 2nd wicket after losing the first on 20 runs. She brought up her fifty in 52 balls and raced to a century in just 83.

Taking another 37 balls, Rodrigues got to her 2nd 150+ score in the tournament and completed up her double century in 161 with help of 21 fours. Her 202-run unbeaten knock came off 163 balls which helped Mumbai post a huge total of 347/2. In the game against Gujarat, Jemimah had a chance of scoring a double century but got out on 178 from 142 balls with another 21 balls left in their innings.

Only next to Smriti Mandhana.

With this double century, Jemimah Rodrigues became the 2nd player to score a double century in the Women’s Under-19 One-Day Competition. In 2013, current Indian opener, Smriti Mandhana scored an unbeaten 224 for Maharashtra in the Inter-State Competition against Gujarat in Vadodara. She scored those runs in just 150 balls with 31 fours. Jemimah’s 178 stood at 2nd spot in the highest individual scores of the 10-year old competition before the 202*. Deepti Sharma scored 175 in 2015 for Uttar Pradesh and Chhattisgarh.

This Under-19 One-Day Competition was started by BCCI in 2007/08 season which was played in Inter-State and Inter-Zonal formats. Another notable double hundred in age group Women’s One-Day cricket came from Nikita Chauhan who scored 213* for Himachal Pradesh earlier this year against Jammu and Kashmir in the Under-23 competition.

Playing two different sports.

The 17-year-old Jemimah Rodrigues has a distinction of playing for the state teams at Under-19 level in Cricket as well as hockey at the age of 13. She represented the Mumbai senior team from an early age and played for both Mumbai and Maharashtra U19 Hockey teams. Jemimah scored 289 runs in just four innings in last year’s U19 One-Day Zonal league and bettered it by average 376 in the Super League of the U19 One-Day competition where she scored 376 runs in only six innings.
