18 year-old from Manipur weaves magic with a ten-wicket haul
Singh found himself on the verge of a hat-trick three times.
Taking all ten wickets in an innings, regardless of the format or platform of the game, is a rare feat not accomplished by many. In fact, only one Indian has managed to do it in the international arena – Anil Kumble. But 18-year-old Rex Rajkumar Singh from India’s north-eastern state Manipur pulled it off in the four-day tournament for Under-19 players, Cooch Behar Trophy at the Rural Development Trust Stadium in Anantapur on Tuesday, December 11.
The left-arm medium pacer ended the match against Arunachal Pradesh with remarkable bowling figures as he gave away only 11 runs in the second innings of the match when he achieved the feat, and six of the total 9.5 overs that he bowled were maidens. All over, Singh finished the match with a total haul of 15 wickets, having taken 5 for 33 in the first innings as well.
Given that he made his first-class debut in the Ranji Trophy this season only, this is quite a commendable performance.
A stupendous spell from the Manipur bowler
Out of the ten wickets he took, five dislodged the bails, two were given lbw and the remaining three were catches. Two of the caught-outs were credited to the wicketkeeper. During the course of the innings, Singh found himself on the verge of a hat-trick three times, but that coup remains for another time.
Needless to say, Rex Rajkumar Singh’s performance helped his team Manipur snatch an easy win against their opponents, although they started out in the first innings with a trail. In response to Arunachal Pradesh’s 138, Manipur could only manage 122 in the first innings.
But the difference of 16 runs did not make any difference as the opposition was bowled out for a mere total of 36 in the second innings, thanks to Singh’s excellent show of performance. It did not take Manipur long to reach the necessary target of 55 and they did it without losing a wicket.
