The IPL 2022 season is all set to get underway from the 26th of March and the finals will be held on the 29th of May as confirmed by the BCCI secretary Jay Shah. The players will have to get into the bio bubble environment due to the Covid-19 issues and four venues in Maharashtra will host the entire league stages. The Wankhede Stadium, Brabourne Stadium and DY Patil Stadium are the designated venues in Mumbai while the MCA International Stadium in Pune will be the other venue.

A total of 70 leagues matches will be held and each of the ten franchises will get to play 14 league games (seven home and seven away) and it will be followed by four playoff matches as usual. However, the ten franchises have now been divided into two groups on basis of their number of championship titles and the number of finals they have made it to. This led to each team playing five teams twice and the remaining four teams once (two home and two away) based on the group placings.

Mumbai Indians and Chennai Super Kings placed in different groups

It has to be noted that Group A consists of the Mumbai Indians, Kolkata Knight Riders, Rajasthan Royals, Delhi Capitals and the Lucknow Super Giants while Group B consists of the Chennai Super Kings, Sunrisers Hyderabad, Royal Challengers Bangalore, Punjab Kings and the Gujarat Titans.

According to the new IPL system, each franchise will get to the teams in their own group twice and they will also be playing their rival (based on performances) from the other group twice. For example, the Mumbai Indians and Chennai Super Kings have placed at 1st and 2nd position according to the number of titles before the league stages, and this meant that Mumbai Indians will play all their members of the group twice and twice against the Chennai Super Kings alone from the other group. They will also be playing against the remaining four teams of the other group once and this will be applicable to the other teams as well.
