Chapter-5:

With the series tied at 1-1, both the teams were desperate to get the all important lead in the series. After winning the toss, Michael Vaughan decided to bat while Glenn McGrath returned to the Australian side, boosting their bowling confidence significantly. This time the English skipper after string of low scorers compiled one of the most splendid innings of the summer as he unleashed the firepower of a captain’s knock in his innings of 166 runs to march his side to a total of 444. Then, Simon Jones exhibited the heroics of ashes colour when his 6 wicket haul mauled the Australian 1st innings to a total of 308 runs with Warne scoring a nose saving knock of 90 runs for the visitors. On day three, only 14 overs could be bowled as the rain gods opened up their arms to somewhat rescue the Australian side.

Just when there were periods in the match, when we thought that the encounter would end up in a draw, the bowlers struck to inspirit the thousands of fans with new optimism rejuvenation. The gallant English bowlers had taken 6 wickets for 236 runs but in spite of that the big brawny like wall in form of Australian skipper; Ponting was not ready to hand over the reins.

England could smell a victory as they were just one wicket away from taking a 2-1 lead in the series. But, for decades the ruthless Australians had continued to wear a never say die spirit on their sleeves. And this time, Lee and McGrath drew the match and its quintessence and elation was ever so evident in the Australian balcony after Lee defended the final ball to avoid the loss from the jaws of defeat.
