Chapter-7:

As the series progressed, suddenly the love of English people towards their national sport was again brimming with love and reminiscence. The speed demon Shaun Tait made his debut in place of injured pro McGrath. In the first innings, the home side accumulated 477 runs on back of a brute century by Freddie Flintoff who seemed relentless by then while Trescothick, Vaughan and Jones also piled up their respective half-centuries. Once again, Simon Jones put up a magical show with the red cherry in hand as he accounted for his 2nd Fifer in consecutive tests which didn’t let Australia to go beyond 218 runs. England enforced the follow-on as the visitors were still trailing by 259 runs.

Chapter-8:

In Australia’s 2nd innings, the most resounding controversy of the series also fared up. Punter was devastated when he got run out by a substitute fielder and his temper exploded as such and much that later, he had to issue an official apology for it. Langer, Katich and Clarke aggregated fifties and Australia set up a target of mere 129 runs. The chase was not as easy as it looked as Australians gave their heart out. At 116-7, the match was still alive as Lee and Warne were blowing fire with fire. Somehow, Giles and Hoggard held on to their nerves to script a fairytale win and it gave a 2-1 lead with a test to go. Now, one could sense that some magical days are to be unwrapped.

Brief scores: 1st innings Eng – 477 (Flintoff 102, Warne 4/102), Aus- 218 (Lee 47, Jones 5/44)

2nd innings: Aus 387 (follow-on) (Langer 61, Harmison 3/93), Eng- 129/7 (Trescothick 27, Warne 4/31)
