18th Jan, 2015 will be remembered as AB de Villiers’ day. De Villiers today broke every fastest record there is in One Day international matches.

Johannesburg is known for its pitch which is known to be a heaven for batsmen. It has seen records like the One Day match with most runs scored involving South Africa and Australia. It saw West Indies chase down 231 in a T20 International match just few days ago against South Africa. On 18th Jan, it saw another run fest today and one man the most of it.

South Africa batted first and enjoyed a 247 run opening stand involving Rilee Rossouw and Hashim Amla. Both scored beautiful hundreds and then in 39th over, Rossouw got out for a well-made 128 runs and West Indies might have had a sigh of relief. But they didn’t know what was going to hit them in the coming 11 overs. In walked AB de Villiers and in the remaining 11 overs, South Africa scored a record 192 runs.

149 off those came from De Villiers’ bat and he only took 44 balls to do it. Meanwhile he broke the records for fastest fifty, when he made 50 off just 16 balls. Then he went on to demolish the record for fastest ODI century in just 31 balls. Even Corey Anderson and Shahid Afridi will have a task at hands if they want their record back.

Amla was on 120 runs and scored just 33 runs off the 30 balls he faced in the overs. De Villiers scored all over the ground. He hit the slog, sweep, reverse sweep, every shot in the book. A record equalling 16 sixes were hit by De Villiers in his innings which had him scoring at the strike rate of 339.

South Africa also made their highest ODI score of 439 runs for the loss of 2 wickets.

Below are some of the records made in the match :

31 Balls in which AB de Villiers got to his hundred breaking the previous record held by Corey Anderson who scored a 36-ball hundred against West Indies in Queenstown in 2014.

16 Balls in which De Villiers got to his half century, another world record. The previous record was held by Sanath Jayasuriya, who got to his 50 off just 17 balls versus Pakistan in 1996.

16 The numbers of sixes De Villiers hit, equaling the world record set by Rohit Sharma of India during his epic 209 run inning against Australia in 2013

339 The strike rate at which De Villiers played his inning. It is the world record for highest strike rate in ODI cricket (min. 50 runs). It is also the first innings were a century was made with a strike rate of 300+.

40 Minutes in which De Villiers got to his hundred. He needed only 19 minutes to reach his fifty.

163 Runs scored by South Africa in the last ten overs of their innings, the most by any team since 2001. (Data is not available for matches prior to 2001)

102 The number of innings Hashim Amla took to reach 18 ODI 100s, a world record. Previous record holder was India’s Virat Kohli who got his 18th century in 119 innings.

3 Batsmen scored centuries Hashim Amla (153), Rilee Rossouw (128) and de Villiers (149). The first instance of three batsman scoring hundreds in the same innings in an ODI ever.

95 Runs and 91 Runs conceded by Jerome Taylor and Jason Holder, the most ever by West Indian bowlers, respectively. Also the only time when 2 bowlers have given away 90+ runs in an ODI match.

439 The total score posted by South Africa, the second highest in ODIs, but their highest in ODIs. The record is 443, made by Sri Lanka against Netherlands in 2006.
