1. Winning a World Cup
Winning an ODI World Cup, regarded as the pinnacle of the sport, is every cricketer’s dream. India achieved it in 1983, under Kapil Dev’s captaincy, and in 2011, under MS Dhoni. West Indies also have done it twice, and Australia have done it a record number of five times, since its inception in 1975.
It is the World Cup every player wants to perform in, and it is this trophy every team wishes to get their hands on. However, some of the biggest names in cricket, such as Brian Lara, Rahul Dravid, Ian Botham and Jaques Kallis ended their glorious careers, unfortunately, without a World Cup winner’s medal in their cabinets.
Ganguly is yet another name on that list, who agonisingly missed out on winning this prestigious title. He was part of three World Cups for India and led the team to the final in 2003. India lost to Australia in the final in Johannesburg in March 2003 by 125 runs.
