Shane Warne, the former legendary spinner from Australia has revealed that he made a surprising investment in the Indian Premier League back in 2008 and it might result in a huge payday for him in the future.

The legendary spinner bid adieu to cricket in 2006 but looking forward to his reputation as a spinner, Rajasthan Royals, an IPL franchise, paid him a hefty amount to make a ‘U-turn’ in cricket. They asked Warne to come out of retirement and play for their team. It turned out to be a major breakthrough for Royals, who won the title in that season. Moreover, Warne played an important role in their successful campaign of IPL 2008.

Shane Warne discusses his deal with Rajasthan Royals

Now, after a decade, Warne claimed that he had struck a strange deal with Rajasthan Royals in the inaugural season of IPL. As part of his deal, the franchise asked him to come out of retirement and run the team according to him. The Royals paid him $657,000 and gave him 0.75 percent in the ownership of the team.

According to Warne, their team was the underdog in that season and were the least favoured. Moreover, it was the inaugural season of the league where Shane Warne and Co looked one of the weakest teams on the paper. However, their side lifted the title in 2008 and now after 11 years, the team’s worth is $200million. Moreover, he thinks that the worth of Rajasthan Royals will get double in the next two years.

“Part of my deal because I had retired from international cricket and I came out (of retirement), they asked me to be captain, coach and run a cricket team the way I wanted to run it; I was the one-stop-shop.”

“We were the underdogs, we were the least favoured, no one gave us a chance to win. It was the first-ever year of the IPL of franchise cricket where owners bought players and players went into auctions. Three percent of $400 million is all right,” the former Australian spinner said as quoted by Herald Sun.
