The young leg spinner from Rajasthan was picked up by the Mumbai Indians in IPL 2018 after he represented the Rising Pune Supergiant in the 2017 season. While Mumbai preferred Mayank Markande in the 2018 season and Chahar did not feature in their eleven, in 2019 the tables turned. From there on, the MI franchise started backing Chahar ahead of Markande.

He did not disappoint them as he took 13 wickets in as many games at an economy rate of 6.55. In T20 cricket if a spinner can come up with such numbers a team would take it with open arms. His performance in the IPL earned him an Indian call up as well. In the only international game he played, he bowled three overs in which he conceded 27 runs and took one wicket.

With Kuldeep Yadav’s form on the decline, it was expected that Chahar may well become the second spinner after Yuzvendra Chahal in the T20I squad. However, in a shocking move, the selectors now opted to leave him out from the limited-overs squads for the Australia tour. While Varun Chakravarthy has been picked in the squad, Rahul’s absence definitely becomes a talking point.
