World cricket has witnessed many captains who have come and set high benchmarks as leaders by leading their respective national teams from the front on the cricket field in their illustrious international careers. These eminent personalities include the likes of Kapil Dev,  Clive Lloyd, Imran Khan, Arjuna Ranatunga, Sourav Ganguly, Martin Crowe, Graeme Smith, etc.

However, when it comes to success, excellence and accomplishments only two prominent names are taken by cricket enthusiasts and pundits across the globe- Mahendra Singh Dhoni and Ricky Ponting. These two have been all-conquering skippers having proved their worth by winning all major titles. Even though MS Dhoni has won all the ICC trophies along with Asia Cups, the IPL, and the now-defunct CLT20, there are a few of Ricky Ponting’s captaincy records that he has not managed to break. Without further ado, here’s a look at three of them.

When it comes to overall captaincy records, Ricky Ponting is miles ahead of MS Dhoni and his accomplishments in big tournaments speak volumes with back-to-back World Cup (2003 and 2007) and Champions Trophy (2006 and 2009) victories. The only ICC events Australia lost during this period were the 2002 and 2004 editions of the Champions Trophy.

Dhoni, on the other hand, captained India in nine ICC tournaments from 2007 to 2016 and the Men in Blue could only manage to win on three occasions- the 2007 T20 World Cup, the 2011 World Cup, and the 2013 Champions Trophy.

As far as their successful captaincy careers are concerned, MS Dhoni has a win percentage of 53.78%. Under his reign, the Indian team won 178 of their 331 matches between 2007 to 2016. Meanwhile, under Ponting’s captaincy, the Aussies enjoyed a win percentage of 67.90 having won 220 of their 324 matches between 2002 to 2012.
