5 Batsmen who got run-out on 99 in ODIs: In Cricket a batsman is considered to have made a fabulous contribution if he gets to triple-figure scores. But quite often a brilliant catch or some great bowling cuts a good innings short and the batter has to take the long walk back to the pavilion. But it is particularly disheartening if he is dismissed for 99. That just makes him feel that he was robbed off a deserved ton. And what can be more disappointing if one gets run out on the unfortunate score of 99. The player would feel like digging a hole and get buried in it at that instant. A brilliant partnership with Dippenaar took them to a big score of 317 at the end. But the innings involved an unlucky instance as Smith was out for 99 when chancing the arm of Sanath Jayasuriya. Jayawardene collected the ball well and dislodged the bails. The innings interestingly witnessed 2 more run outs with Kallis and Boucher meeting the same fate. Sanath Jayasuriya 99 (83 b) v England, 2003 (Photo Source: AFP) This was the 10th game of the 2003 VB series. England batting first in Adelaide had scored a commendable 279 credit Nick Knight who scored 88. In reply the Sri Lankan innings was a one-man show for the first part till Sangakkara arrived and gave ample support to Jayasuriya. But Sanath was tragically run out on 99 by Nasser Hussain, the England skipper as the Lankans found the going tough after that. The innings included 9 fours and 2 hits over the fence. Andrew Caddick was on fire and took 4 wickets as Sri Lanka fell short by 19 runs. 3. Adam Gilchrist 99 (88 b) v Sri Lanka, 2003 Adam Gilchrist. Deciding to bat after winning the toss Australia made a fabulous 319 all credit to Ricky Ponting’s marvelous ton and his partnership with Adam Gilchrist who was unluckily run out on 99. Chaminda Vaas’s throw robbed him off a well-deserved ton and the left-hander was left reeling. Sri Lanka couldn’t even match up one bit in their reply and folded for 223. Australia later went on to win the 2003 World Cup title for the consecutive second time. 4. Playing in the division one game of the European championship, against Scotland Ireland were inserted in by the Scotts on what seemed a lively pitch. The Irish innings revolved solely around Morgan who made 99 but was run out on that score by some brilliance in the field by Smith. None of the other batsmen could make a significant contribution. In reply to Ireland’s 240 the Scottish team folded for a mere 155 and were particularly dismal against opposition pacers. 5. Be it umpiring calls, a bad shot or some brilliant bowling he has seen the rough end quite frequently. This was a game in Belfast Ireland in the aftermath of India’s disastrous campaign in the 2007 ODI world cup in West Indies. India had crashed out from the league stages and there was justified anger among the fans. In the 1st game of the 3 match series on a tough pitch, India battled hard courtesy Rahul Dravid and Tendulkar putting up a brave show. But sedate batting from the rest of the batsmen meant India could manage only 242 on the board. Sachin Tendulkar was cruelly run out on 99 after misjudging the second run. The Indian bowlers though, made the Proteas work hard for the total and they reached home only in the final over.
