5 Batsmen who narrowly missed out on Orange Cap in the IPL

Indian Premier League (IPL) has always favored the batters. The league offers very little to the bowlers and understandably so. All the world class batsmen have played in the IPL. From Matthew Hayden to Sanath Jayasuriya, everyone has come and played some extraordinary knocks. However, not many have been consistent with the bat. The Orange Cap has been one of the highest honors of the IPL and it cannot be held if you inherit even one-bit of inconsistency. That said, there are batters who have missed out on the Orange Cap even after being extremely consistent. Let us remember some of the batters who lit up the tournament with their explosive performances but missed out on the honor. Here are top five batsmen who missed out on the Orange Cap narrowly. 1. David Warner (Sunrisers Hyderabad) – 2016 David Warner SRH. (Photo Source: BCCI) David Warner was extremely consistent with the bat during last season of the Indian Premier League. He scored a whopping 838 runs in the season. Warner was the captain of the Sunrisers Hyderabad and took his team into the final. Moreover, he won the final. He missed out on the Orange Cap by 105 runs and guess who won it? Yes right, Virat Kohli. Warner scored at an average of 60.57 hitting nine half centuries. He hit 31 sixes in that season and the strike rate at which he scored was a magnificent 151. The Australian won’t mind missing out on the Orange Cap as he won the prestigious league. 2. Jacques Kallis (Royal Challengers Bangalore) – 2010 Jacques Kallis. (Photo Source: Twitter) Jacques Kallis is one of the best all-rounders to have graced the game. The South African has played some fantastic innings with the bat while providing some invaluable wickets when handed the bowl. In 2010, he was one of the most consistent batters in the league. He smacked the bowlers for six half centuries that season. The Protea scored 572 runs and missed the orange cap by just 46 runs. Sachin Tendulkar was the Orange Cap bearer that year scoring 618 runs. Kallis went on to play for Kolkata Knight Riders as well. He was one of the few veterans who successfully plied their trade in this league. 3. Virat Kohli (Royal Challengers Bangalore) – 2011 Virat Kohli RCB. (Photo Source: BCCI) Virat Kohli was one of those aggressive lads who was still learning his way around. Playing for one of the richest sides in the league, Kohli was in red-hot form during the 2011 season. However, this time he was not to be the one to win the Orange Cap and had to be second on the highest run-getters list. He was outwitted by one of his own teammates, Chris Gayle. The West Indian giant was on top of his game that season and did not miss the opportunity to score big. Virat was stuck at 557 runs as Gayle outscored him by 51 runs. He had scored his runs at a healthy average of 46, hitting at a strike rate of 121. 4. Chris Gayle (Royal Challengers Bangalore) – 2013 Chris Gayle. (Photo Source: BCCI) The Gayle storm had arrived during the 2013 season and was not ready to leave the tournament. However, it was not the only storm that hit this cash-rich tournament. Michael Hussey during the fag end of his career was blossoming like a youngster during the 2013 season. While Gayle scored a whopping 708, Hussey who represented CSK got better of him. Playing a game more Hussey was able to get past Gayle and grab that Orange Cap. However, the West Indian entertained everyone thoroughly as no one will ever forget his innings of 175 not out against Pune Warriors India. He scored at an average of 51 with a massive strike rate of 156, which was more than any of the top five batters that year. 5. Ajinkya Rahane (Rajasthan Royals) – 2015 Rahane. (Photo Source: BCCI) Ajinkya Rahane was in the form of his life during the 2015 edition of the IPL. He smacked the bowlers at will and hardly put a foot wrong in all of the tournament. The Mumbaikar missed out on the Orange Cap by just 22 runs. David Warner who played an inning more than the Indian batter benefitted from the same. Rahane played 13 innings scoring 540 runs in the process. He had the best average of 49 which was more than the top five run-getters. His strike rate was 130 which was extremely good considering the position he batted in. Warner scored 562 runs that season his top score was the same as Ajinkya Rahane’s; 91.
