Bangladesh was experiencing one of the best years in cricket albeit in limited-overs format but that had instilled in them the confidence that they could replicate it into the longest format of the game. England visited Bangladesh for a 2-match Test series and won the first Test comprehensively.

Hosts won an all-important toss on a square turner in Mirpur and elected to bat first. Tamim Iqbal came out with aggressive intent knowing that the pitch would be best to bat on day 1. He batted fluently against both spin and pace attack of England. Despite losing a wicket in the third over of the day, the opener continued his attacking strokeplay which left Cook frantically shuffling through his bowling options. Tamim scored a ton filled with judicious strokes and was eventually dismissed for 104 and hosts collapsed from 171/1 to 220 all out.

In reply, the visitors took a crucial lead of 24 runs but that didn’t matter as Bangladesh spinners wreaked havoc in the second innings with the help of a young Mehedi Hasan. They won the match by 108 runs on the back of 12-for from Mehedi in the match.
