5 Best performers of the Ranji Trophy 2015-16

The 2015-16 season of India’s premier domestic competition, the Ranji Trophy, produced some magnificent cricket. Many top players, including the ones who play for the national side, displayed their skills during the long season. Mumbai was crowned the champion for the 41st time after defeating Saurashtra in the final in Pune. Here’s a list to top 5 players who did consistently well for their respective teams throughout the tourney. 1. Shreyas Iyer (Mumbai): (Photo Source: Twitter) Relying on instinct and a game without half-measures, Shreyas Iyer capped off a prolific season with a brilliant hundred in the summit clash. Walking in at 0 for 1 on a green top in Pune he brought up a 114-ball 100 is a manner that should please the national selectors to no end. He made 1321 runs at an average of 73.80 and an astonishing a strike rate of 92.70. His dismissal in the final left him just 95 runs short of VVS Laxman’s record for most runs in a Ranji Trophy season. 2. Akhil Herwadkar (Mumbai): Akhil Herwadkar. (Photo by Francois Nel – IDI/IDI via Getty Images) Iyer’s Mumbai teammate Akhil Herwadkar finished the season as the second highest run-scorer. The left-handed opener made 879 runs at an average of 48.83 and gave his team solid starts in most matches. In a game against Punjab, his part-time off-breaks did the trick for Mumbai as they won by an innings and 12 runs at Wankhede in October. Herwadkar, who had bowled rival skipper Yuvraj Singh round his legs on the previous day, emerged as the surprise package with an innings haul of 6 for 52, five of which he claimed on the final day. 3. Jalaj Saxena (Madhya Pradesh): Jalaj Saxena. (Photo Source: MPCA) Opening batsman, off-spinner and a yoga expert, Jalaj Saxena is a true all-rounder. In 2013-14, he had scored 545 runs and claimed 35 wickets, while in 2012-13 his corresponding numbers were 769 and 10. The current season was excellent for the talented MP cricketer as he made 588 at an average of 51.98 and claimed 49 wickets at 22.55. His 8/58 against Railways in Gwalior recorded the best bowling figures of the season. He won the Lala Amarnath award for being the best all-rounder in the Ranji Trophy 2014-15 and has continued to impress ever since. 4. Shahbaz Nadeem (Jharkhand): Shahbaz Nadeem. (Photo by MANAN VATSYAYANA/AFP/Getty Images) The Jharkhand skipper finished the season as the highest wicket-taker. His slow left-arm spin yielded 51 wickets at 19.62. He registered a 5-wicket innings haul four times while had a 10-wicket match haul once. His produced his best spell in an innings of 7/45 against Himachal Pradesh in Ranchi. His performances and leadership took his team to the knockout rounds this season. Nadeem has been more renowned for his spells in the shortest format of the game, notably for the Delhi Daredevils in the IPL, however, he proved that he has the skills to deliver in the longer format as well. 5. Krishna Das (Assam): (Photo Source: Twitter) Assam entered the semi-finals of the Ranji Trophy for the first time and fast bowler Krishna Das’ spells were critical to their success. The bowler known for bowling long spells finished with 50 wickets at an average of 16.06. This included five 5-wicket hauls in an innings and two 10-wicket match hauls. His best spell was 7/21 against Odisha in Cuttack. On October 6, 2006 Krishna bore the brunt of a horrible car accident. He had a metal plate inserted to straighten his left arm which he has till day. The talented bowler considers this incident as the turning point in his career which brought the best out of him.
