4. Players vs Management (1998)
West Indies Cricket Board has a long history of not having good relations with their players due to their salary paying scenarios. And, the first incident cum controversy hogged the spotlight back in 1998 when their national team was scheduled to travel South Africa.
The players put some of their demands like payouts, allowance and travel arrangements in front of their cricket board. At that time, WICB accepted all the demands of the players and the squad left for playing series against Proteas. However, when players reached London, they didn’t get what they had expected from the board. Hence, Brian Lara (captain on that tour) and Carl Hooper (vice-captain) stayed opted to stay in London only.
West Indies Cricket board fired both the players with immediate effect as they had to suffer huge losses. Later on, the players and the board came on to the same terms. After that, the team tour went to South Africa where they lost the Test series by 5-0.
