5 Bowlers who bowled even after getting injured: Cricket might be considered as one of the not so dangerous outdoor sport but on a day, we have seen players get career threatening or even life threatening injuries. But the beauty of the sport is seen when the players recover from the blows they suffer during the game and resume play again, and some even playing in the same match carrying on with the injured bodies. Bowling is the toughest thing to perform in cricket while being injured. Keeping your pace or spin, line and length of the ball when you are in pain is always a tough task. Hence very few players managed to bowl after being injured in the same match prior to their act. Here we look at the 5 Bowlers who bowled even after getting injured 1. Devon Malcolm, England vs South Africa at The Oval; 1994: Devon Malcolm. (© Getty Images) England pacer Devon Malcolm, who made Jonty Rhodes retired hurt during South Africa’s 1st innings came out to bat at No.11 and found tough time facing Fanie de Villiers. De Villiers injured Malcolm with a sharp bouncer which went on to hit the batsman’s head. But Malcolm recovered from the blow to deliver one of the greatest bowling performances. He opened the bowling for his side and got the South Africans down to 3 for just 1 run. He continued his rhythm and kept picking wickets to finish off with a figures of 9 for 57 in the 16.2 overs he bowled, which played a very important role in helping England win the match by 8 wickets. Devon Malcolm’s figures of 9 for 57 got him man of the Match award, which was also the 6th best bowling figures in a Test innings at that time. 2. Malcolm Marshall, West Indies vs England at Headingly; 1984: (source) One of the greatest West Indies pacers of all time, Malcolm Marshall got injured on the first day of the match as he got his left arm broken while fielding, the injury kept him away from England’s 1st innings. Later he managed to come out to bat at No.11 and batted by handling the bat with right hand only. Then came Marshall’s brave moment as he opened the bowling in England’s 2nd innings and made the hosts unsettled. His outburst came towards the end as a result, England was bowled out for 159 from a stage of 138 for 6 helping his side to complete an 8-wicket win. Malcolm Marshall finished off with figures of 7 for 53, his 2nd best figures in a Test inning. 3. Frank Tyson, England vs Australia at Sydney; 1954: (source) England pacer Frank Tyson, who picked up 4 wickets during Australia’s 1st innings got hit at the back of his head by Ray Lindwall, minutes before Lunch on day 5. Tyson, who was unconscious for few minutes, went for X-Rays during Lunch break and returned to get bowled by Lindwall. Despite been injured, Tyson came out to bowl in Australia’s 2nd innings. The opponents needed 223 to win the match. Tyson kept cleaning up the batsmen as Australia got bowled out for just 184 falling 38 short of target. Tyson finished up with figures of 6 for 85 and completed 10-wicket haul in the game. 4. Anil Kumble, India vs West Indies at Antigua; 2002: Anil Kumble. (Photo Source: AFP) India’s legendary spinner Anil Kumble got hit on his face by a Mervyn Dillon delivery during the first innings on 2nd day of the match. Despite of spilling blood, and bearing pain he continued to bat till he got out. Later it was found that Kumble had got his jaw broken and that would make him unavailable for the remainder of the series. He was set to leave to Bangalore on day 4 of the Test match but however, he came out to bowl in final session of day 3 with a bandage spread over his head. He bowled 14 consecutive overs till the stumps on day 3 and got the dangerous Brain Lara trapped in front of the wickets. 5. Terry Jenner, Australia vs England at Sydney; 1971: (source) Terry Jenner, the leg break bowler tried to duck a nasty bouncer from John Snow during Australia’s 1st innings but ended up getting hit on his head. The blow made him retire at the score of 8 towards end of the day. On the 3rd morning, Jenner resumed his batting and added 22 more runs to his tally before getting out. He later came out to bowl during England’s innings and even picked up a wicket. He bowled a total of 21 overs after been injured and recorded figures of 1 for 39.
