Take nothing away from the legend Sunil Gavaskar as a cricketer, but his time is pretty much up as a commentator. There’s a famous line in the show Game of Thrones “The ink is dry”, which pretty much is the case with the Little Master. He is falling short of words and is only being repetitive in an obnoxious way.

A couple of years ago during the India-New Zealand series, Gavaskar and other fellow panelists spent a good five minutes in discussing how a selfie should be taken whilst there was some pretty interesting cricketing action happening. Even in Hindi commentary, he uses a lot of informal catch phrases to describe the action, which once again has been repeated too many times.

Sunny Gavaskar is still a pretty amazing analyst and reads the game better than anyone else. Another facet which has been a bit predictable and obnoxious is his usage of the Caribbean accent to sound funny, which doesn’t sound funny anymore. He still speaks a lot of sense when it comes to his columns, but he lost his extempore ability which is pretty imperative for a commentator.
