5 Contenders for the position of Pakistan team's head coach

After the appointment of Inzamam-ul-Haq as the new Cheif Selector, the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) is now on a lookout for a suitable successor to Waqar Younis. The race for the role of head coach with the Pakistan cricket team intensified as several top foreigners applied for the position. It is reported that England’s Peter Moores, South African Mickey Arthur and Australians Dean Jones, Tom Moody and Jamie Siddons are the top candidates to have applied for the position. Here in this article, we try to dig into the past records of the front-runners in the race to becoming Pakistan’s next head coach. 1. Peter Moores (England): Peter Moores. (Photo Source: Twitter) Peter Moores, the former Sussex wicket-keeper, has had a pretty successful coaching career so far. Moores had two stints as the head coach of the English team. His first tenure in 2007-2008, where he succeeded Duncan Fletcher, was very unsatisfactory which led to his removal in early 2009 by the England and Wales Cricket Board. Five years later, he was re-appointed for the job and found great success. The former England coach has a stupendous record in the domestic circuit. He guided Sussex to their first Championship title in their 164-year history. ECB then appointed him as the coach for the England A side in 2001. He also served as the director of the ECB’s academy. After his sacking in 2009, Moores took up the coaching role for Lancashire and helped them to clinch their first outright Championship success in 77 years in 2011. 2. Dean Jones (Australia): Dean Jones. (Photo Source: Twitter) Dean Jones doesn’t have a long coaching history, unlike his competitors who feature in the list. Jones, however, had a long eventful international career, especially as an ODI cricketer. He was a typical modern day cricketer who was known for his brash brand of batting. He had attracted a fair bit of controversies during his playing time as well during his commentary stint after his retirement. He forayed into coaching and mentoring after he was signed as the head coach of the Islamabad United in Pakistan Super League (PSL) in 2016. His time with the team was fruitful as Islamabad became the inaugural champions. 3. Tom Moody (Australia): Tom Moody. (Photo Source: Twitter) Former Australian all-rounder Tom Moody was a wonderful cricketer during his time and later earned a good reputation as an international coach. After retiring in 2000, Moody turned to administration before taking up coaching. Initially, he served as the president of the Australian Cricketers’ Association as the director of cricket at his former county side Worcestershire. He hit headlines in 2005 after his names started doing rounds for the Indian coaching job. However, he was later appointed as Sri Lanka’s coach. Moody had a very productive term with Sri Lanka. Under his helm, the Lankan side reached the 2007 World Cup final. Moody currently is the coach of Western Australia and Sunrisers Hyderabad in the Indian Premier League. 4. Mickey Arthur (South Africa): Mickey Arthur. (Photo Source: Twitter) With 6657 runs in 110 FC match, Mickey Arthur was one of the domestic heavyweights in South Africa during his playing career. Soon after retiring in 2001, Arthur began coaching with his former club Griqualand West and later took up the job with Eastern Cape in 2003. In 2005, Cricket South Africa chose him to take over as the national coach after Ray Jenning’s departure. His coaching stint with South Africa was sloppy before the Graeme Smith led side resurrected thing with some consistent performances. His tenure with the national team expired in 2010 following which he travelled to Australia to become coach of Western Australia. His coaching career touched another high after he became the first foreign-born coach of the Australian national team. However, his time with the Australian team was not great as mediocre showings on the field and team discipline issues resulted in Arthur being sacked from the job in 2013. 5. Jamie Siddons (Australia): Jamie Siddons. (Photo Source: Twitter) Jamie Siddons has been associated with Australian cricket for a long time. Siddons was an assistant coach of the Australian team after being appointed as the senior coach at the Centre of Excellence before the 2005 Ashes. Initially, Siddons began his coaching as the South Australia assistant and spent four years under Wayne Phillips and Greg Chappell. In 2007, Siddons got his first international coaching duty when he accepted an offer to coach Bangladesh after initially turning it down. A right-handed batsman by trade, Siddons is counted among one of those domestic stalwarts who never won a Test cap. However, he did represent Australia internationally after he played his only ODI in 1988 against Pakistan.
