The group stage clash between the Melbourne Stars and the Perth Scorchers in 2012 had controversy etched to it. After the Scorchers were rolled over for 69 runs by a bowling-masterclass from Lasith Malinga, the Stars raced away to 29 runs from two overs. However, rain interrupted play and the game resumed at 7:52 pm local time.

The confusion sparked after the revised target of six runs in five overs was set. In general circumstances, a minimum of five overs from both sides constitutes a game. However, the Stars already exceeded the target within five overs.

Nevertheless, as per the formalities, Hilton Cartwright came out and bowled a delivery to Rob Quiney after which the match was over. The victory margin also altered from 10 wickets to 24 runs D/L method. The mannerism of the victory, subsequently, irked Justin Langer and the Scorchers’ community.
