The player auction for the 10th edition of IPL saw some overseas bowlers bagging a huge amount of money. The English all-rounder Ben Stokes was picked by Rising Pune Supergiant for a whopping INR 14.5 crore making him the costliest player of the season. Other players who attracted high bids were Tymal Mills, Trent Boult, Chris Woakes and Kagiso Rabada. All these players featured for their respective sides consistently in the season so far. As far as the Indian contingent in the auction was concerned, all the big names were already retained by their respective sides and not too many huge stars were up for grabs. There were still a few domestic players who were available who had made names for themselves either from smaller T20 leagues or by consistent performances in the domestic tournaments. They attracted a good amount of bids but the franchise did not give them a chance to feature in the playing XI. But the KKR squad is full of all-rounders and even a world class player like Shakib Al Hasan has been made to sit out in numerous matches and so, it’s been difficult for Dhawan to find a place in the XI. He had played earlier for Kings XI Punjab and then moved to Mumbai Indians where he made some useful contributions. The 27-year-old is a handy medium pace bowler and a useful batsman in the lower middle-order. A good run in the domestic cricket meant that he was picked in the Indian ODI and T20 squads to Austalia and Zimbabwe. #4 Chris Jordan – INR 50 Lakh (Photo Source: Twitter) English pacer Chris Jordan was bought by the Sunrisers Hyderabad in the second round of the IPL auctions this year. He was bagged for his base price of INR 50 Lakh. Jordan is a renowned T20 specialist and is a regular name in the English national side in the limited-overs format of the game. He was with the Royal Challengers Bangalore in the previous edition of the tournament. Jordan has been unlucky to have not been a part of the playing eleven of the Sunrisers Hyderabad. The SRH camp already boasts of an excess of overseas players that has caused them a problem of plenty. With all-rounders being the preferred choice in the lineup, Jordan has been missing out on opportunities. Jordan is a veteran T20 player who has played 78 matches thus far in the shortest format of the game. He has 83 wickets to his name with a strike rate of 18.1. #3 Eklavya Dwivedi – INR 75 Lakh Eklavya Dwivedi. Sunrisers Hyderabad and Gujarat Lions were keen to pick him and he went to the former for a bid of INR 75 Lakh. It’s difficult for uncapped wicket-keepers to break into the squad which is exactly what happened to Dwivedi in the SRH squad. The experienced Naman Ojha is a regular part of the playing XI which meant that Dwivedi had to sit out. His previous franchises were Pune Warriors India, Chennai Super Kings and Gujarat Lions. Despite being a part of 4 different franchises in IPL, he has played just 4 games in his IPL career. #2 Murugan Ashwin – INR 1 crore Murugan Ashwin. But he couldn’t replicate the same in IPL and managed to pick only 7 wickets in 10 matches and as a result, he was dropped from the RPS squad and was once more in the auction. He went in with a base price of INR 10 Lakh and his previous franchise tried to buy him again. But at the end, he was picked by Delhi Daredevils for INR 1 crore. The Delhi squad has the frontline spinners in the form of Amit Mishra and Shahbaz Nadeem who have done a great job so far that kept Ashwin out of the team. #1 Krishnappa Gowtham – INR 2 crore Krishnappa Gowtham. His base price was just INR 10 Lakh but a tussle between Kolkata Knight Riders, Sunrisers Hyderabad and Mumbai Indians raised it to INR 2 crore as he went in the camp of the Mumbai-based franchise. Gowtham is known for his canny off-spin bowling and pinch-hitting abilities. But the Mumbai squad has all the bases covered and are doing great in the league so far. They have a flurry of all-rounders who are capable of hitting the big shots and the spin department is secured by Harbhajan Singh which means that Gowtham will have to wait a bit longer for his chances.
