The case of Steve Smith is very similar to David Warner, in terms of salaries earned through the IPL and The Hundred. Like Warner, he was the second pick and it was the Welsh Fire who picked him up from the draft. The salary cap assigned to him was £125,000.

However, the former Australian captain earns way more in the IPL. In 2014, he was bought by the Rajasthan Royals (RR) for INR 4 crores but in 2018, he was retained at a stunning price of INR 12 crores. In fact, he was the only player that RR retained ahead of the auctions in 2018.

Smith has been a regular member in the IPL and has also been the captain. He didn’t play the 2018 season and yet, RR kept faith in the former Australian captain. In fact, he was even made the captain midway through the season.
