5 Cricketers who pulled out of IPL after auction

As the Indian Premier League (IPL) has grown, it has become a permanent fixture in the cricket calendar. Seven weeks spanning across March, April and May are filled with some high quality, high octane cricket. The IPL has become a festival in India and it’s a huge part of the Indian cricketing circle. Best players from around the globe take part in it as well and rub shoulders with and against the best. They are picked through the auctions along with the other Indian stars. However, there have been instances where players have had to pull out due to various reasons both before and after the auction. If it was before, teams can plan accordingly but a player pulling out after the auction can have an adverse impact on the side. Thus, here are five players who have pulled out of the IPL after the auction. 1. Josh Hazlewood (2015) Josh Hazlewood. (Photo Source: Twitter) A lot of people may not know this but this isn’t the first time Josh Hazlewood has been picked in the IPL auction. Chennai Super Kings (CSK) have availed the services of the tall pacer at his base price of INR 2 crore. But it was back in 2014 that he was first picked in the IPL auctions. Hazlewood made his ODI debut back in 2010 and T20I debut in 2013 but there was hardly anybody that noticed him. Mumbai Indians (MI) bought him for his base price of INR 50 lakhs in the 2014 auctions. He didn’t play a single game yet, he was retained for the 2015 season. However, the New South Wales quick pulled out of the 2015 season due to the increasing workload. 2014-15 was his first full season with the Australian team where he featured in both red and white-ball cricket. Moreover, Hazlewood had a dream debut against India as he picked up a fifer. He also went on to be a part of the World Cup-winning Australian side later that summer. Thus, he skipped the 2015 IPL in order to remain fit and fresh. 2. Mitchell Starc (2018) Mitchell Starc. (Photo Source: Twitter) It’s hard to believe that Mitchell Starc has played a mere two seasons of the IPL. It was back in 2014 that the left-arm fast bowler was first picked and it was Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) for INR 5 crore. He was their premier fast bowler as he took 34 wickets from 27 games at an average of 20.38. However, in the subsequent seasons, he was injured and hence, was let go by RCB right before the 2017 auctions. In 2018, he was a hot pick and Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) broke the bank and got him at INR 9.4 crore. His white-ball skills were secret to none. However, Starc pulled out of the IPL a couple of weeks before it started. He suffered from tibial bone stress in his right leg in the Test series in South Africa. Hence, it was the third successive season that Starc missed due to injury. 3. Pat Cummins (2018) Pat Cummins. He featured in four games across two seasons for Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR). In 2017, the Australian quick was bought by Delhi Daredevils (now Capitals) for a sum of INR 4.5 crore. Cummins played 12 games in that season and returned with 15 wickets. Moreover, he had a strike-rate of 145.28 with the bat. In the 2018 auction, Mumbai Indians (MI) bought him for a price of INR 5.4 crore. He was expected to play a big role but it wasn’t to be. Cummins pulled out of the 2018 season due to injury. It was a back injury ruled him out of the entire season. However, a couple of seasons later (2020), Cummins has become the second-most expensive player in the history of the IPL auction. 4. David Willey (2019) David Willey. (Photo Source: Twitter) David Willey is one of the most underrated T20 cricketers going around. He can swing the new ball and bowl pretty decently at the death. He can tonk the ball a long way and is a good fielder. Hence, he was roped in by Chennai Super Kings (CSK) in the 2018 season as a replacement player. He replaced Kedar Jadhav who was ruled out of the tournament due to a hamstring injury. Willey played three games and bowled 10 overs across those games, picking up two wickets. He didn’t get a chance to bat. However, the left-arm pacer was retained by CSK for the 2019 season. But a week into the 12th edition, Willey had to pull out due to family reasons. He was supposed to join in late to be with his wife who was expecting the birth of their second child. But in the end, he had to pull out. “Unfortunately, due to family reasons, I’ve had to pull out of the IPL. Chennai were very understanding and supportive as Yorkshire have been as well,” Willey was quoted saying. 5. Chris Woakes (2020) Chris Woakes. (Photo Source: Twitter) Chris Woakes is the latest player who has pulled out of the IPL. The England all-rounder was bought by Delhi Capitals (DC) for his base price of INR 1.5 crore. Delhi was supposed to be his third IPL franchise after he turned out to play for Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) in 2017 and Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) in 2018. While Woakes had good returns at KKR, picking up 17 wickets in the 10th edition, he couldn’t replicate his performances for RCB where he was pretty expensive. However, Woakes has decided to skip the 2020 season of the IPL in order to remain fresh for the upcoming international season. England play six Test matches in the 2020 home summer with the season starting on the 4th of June against West Indies. Ahead of the auction, Delhi head coach, Ricky Ponting had suggested Woakes might go for big money but it was only Delhi Capitals that bid for him.
