It was the biggest moment. The final of the World Cup, playing in front of the home crowd and the Indian team needed 275 runs to lift the trophy. But the Sri Lankans who were playing their second consecutive World Cup final weren’t going to give it in without a fight. Both the Indian openers were back in the hut early.

And the chase became that much more difficult. Virat Kohli and Gautam Gambhir produced a splendid partnership that sucked up all the pressure and looked well set to go for the kill. But that is when Kohli was dismissed by Tillakaratne Dilshan. The wicket looked a tad bit slower and thus the Sri Lankans deployed spin from both ends. It was Muttiah Muralitharan who was bowling from the other end.

As soon as Dhoni realized that the opposition had Murali into the attack keeping in mind the next man in will be Yuvraj Singh who doesn’t read the off-spinner that well, he decided to go in himself. He hadn’t had the best of times with the bat in the World Cup whereas Yuvi was all set to be named the Player of the tournament. But he knew if Yuvraj went in and got out, the pressure would increase even further and that even if he failed the left-hander had it in him to take the team home from there.

Dhoni walked out and changed the course of the game. He played his strokes absolutely freely and all of a sudden it appeared like there was no pressure on the Indians. Gambhir, unfortunately, got out on 97 and couldn’t score a hundred and see the team through. Yuvraj eventually joined the skipper in the middle and the duo took the team on verge of victory.

When Nuwan Kulasekara ran in to bowl the second ball of the 49th over MS Dhoni hit a magnificent six as the ball sailed over the fielders into the already erupting Wankhede crowd not only the player, the support staff and the spectators present at the stadium but the entire nation jumped out of their seats and celebrated the victory. If there is one moment that will give us goose bumps for life it is this!
