5 former cricketers who might take up India's head coach position

This definitely has to be one of the most disappointing and diabolical weeks for all Indian cricket lovers. Beginning with the humiliating loss to Pakistan in the final of the ICC Champions Trophy to Anil Kumble stepping down as the head coach of Indian cricket after having accepted in public that the captain was not happy with his “Way of coaching”, nothing went right in the last few days. Kumble posted a letter on his Instagram and Twitter profiles where he explained the reasons behind him not extending his contract and a thank you to all those who’ve supported him. He clearly mentioned that the BCCI did try to resolve the altercation between the captain Virat Kohli and Kumble, but the latter opted to move on as the matter didn’t resolve. What happened has happened and we’ll have to look forward. With the West Indies series approaching, India might as well play without a coach and Sanjay Bangar might play the role of an Interim till a full-time coach is appointed. There is a possibility that Sanjay Bangar himself might get the full-time role, but the chances are very remote. Here’s a list of 5 former cricketers, who applied for the post earlier this month and might as well end up as the head coach of India, probably after the West Indies series. #5 Lalchand Rajput Lalchand Rajput. (Photo Source: Twitter) Former Indian cricketer Lalchand Rajput is one amongst those 10 people(approximate) who applied for the head coach job. He is currently the coach of Afghanistan’s International side and they’ve pulled off some amazing results under Rajput. One of the reasons why Rajput is a contender for to get this post is his experience. He was the team manager for India in the 2007 ICC World T20, which India won by beating arch-rivals Pakistan in the final. He took charge of various IPL teams as the head coach for Mumbai Indians and Kings XI Punjab. Lalchand Rajput’s experience is invaluable, but having said that, it will be really surprising if he’s appointed. #4 Richard Pybus Richard Pybus. Pybus is currently the team Director of West Indies. His most successful period as a coach was during his tenure with South African first-class teams Titans and Cape Cobras, where he led these sides to nine championships. He played a vital role in bringing some stalwarts of South African cricket like Justin Kemp, Makhaya Ntini and Mark Boucher to the elite level, back in the 90s when he was the Under-19 coach of Border. His CV has some remarkable facets which cannot be overlooked and Pybus will have his fingers crossed until the next coach of Indian cricket is announced. #3 Craig McDermott Craig McDermott. He played 71 Test matches for his country, picking up an astonishing 291 wickets. McDermott was an absolute superstar of his generation who inspired many youngsters during the 80s. One of the most successful periods of his coaching career came when he worked with Australia as the bowling coach. It was during his tenure when Mitchell Johnson’s breathtaking performance in the Ashes inspired Aussies to a 5-0 victory. In an interview with sportsstarlive.com, he said that he had applied for the Indian head coach post and said it would be an honour to serve Indian cricket. #2 Virender Sehwag Virender Sehwag. (Photo by Francois Nel/Getty Images) The swashbuckling opener from Delhi who entertained one and all during his days as a cricketer, Virender Sehwag is currently working as a commentator for Star Sports and the head coach of Kings XI Punjab. Sehwag appointed Maxwell as the captain of Punjab for this season’s IPL. This move was eventually trolled and criticized but Maxwell showed great leadership qualities and almost took Punjab to the semifinals. This is what we can expect from Virender Sehwag, something different. But some rumours suggested the application which he submitted was not prepared in a convincing manner. Yet, he’s is the person whose most likely to get the job, since most of the players in the current team are good friends of his and they will gel well together. #1 Tom Moody Tom Moody. Sunrisers were terrific in the 2017 edition as well but succumbed to Kolkata Knight Riders in the Eliminator. Moody saw a potential leader in David Warner and appointed him as the captain in 2015. Not many trusted he would do the job for his coach but Warner has impressed one and all with his leadership qualities. Many experts rate him as one of the best captains in the world right now and he should take over the reigns as the Australian skipper as well, replacing Steve Smith. Tom Moody was an integral part of Sunrisers and David Warner’s incredible rise to fame over the course of time. One reason why Moody is the top most contender to get this post is his cool and collective attitude and the cordial relationship he maintains with players. Sehwag might be the pick of the lot for many, but Moody actually is the one’s whose most likely to get a nod considering his past record.
