In recent times the Indian cricket has received a lot of flak for their decision-making skills. The selection panel and the team management have been living off the edge because of their tactical errors which have cost the team on multiple occasions. The things were shaping up similarly when recently the selectors termed Rohit Sharma as their new Test opener. It created a buzz in the cricketing circle for a couple of weeks.
Many high-profile cricketers gave the decision a green signal and backed the right-hander to come good in his new role. Even skipper, Virat Kohli assured that the Mumbaikar will be given every possible support to rediscover his mojo in the classic format. However, some of the former Indian cricketers didn’t consider it a wise move. They have their reasons which indicate that Rohit opening the innings might not be a forward step.
Here is the list of 5 former Indian cricketers who didn’t like the idea of Rohit Sharma opening the innings in Test cricket
1) Aakash Chopra
Nowadays the former Indian cricketer who has become popular due to his commentary stint is Aakash Chopra. He has been entertaining the cricket lovers with his catch-phrases and detailed analysis of the game. Such has been his rise that people now remember him for his mic-skills rather than his decade long cricketing career.
He also has a Youtube channel where he discusses his ideas regarding the game and particularly his thoughts on the Indian cricket team. To go with it his tagline of “AakashVani” and Q&A session with fans has attracted a lot of attention. In one such vlog, he also gave his opinions regarding Rohit Sharma’s opening chances in red-ball cricket at the time when India was playing England in their den and the team was facing their usual opening woes.
So the fans took the opportunity to clear their doubts with Chopra. According to the former Indian opener, Rohit lacked the technique to play in challenging conditions. He wanted the selectors to put their bet on domestic talents instead of trying out a player based on his white-ball skills. He concluded by saying that it is a tempting idea but not a good one for the team in the long-run.
