Team India has landed in West Indies for the tour and we are just a couple weeks away from the series opener. The Indian squad prepared diversely in the training camp organized by coach Anil Kumble at the National Cricket Academy in Bengaluru.

The four-Test series starts from the 21st of July and will conclude after seven weeks on 22nd of August. The Indian team has managed to win just 5 Test matches in 45 attempts from 1953 when they first toured the West Indies. Indians have always struggled outside the country and the record in this country is no different.

Indian Test skipper Virat Kohli will be eager to win the series and initiate the change in trends. No Indian captain has won more than one Test match in West Indies. Ajit Wadekar, Bishan Singh Bedi, Sourav Ganguly, Rahul Dravid and MS Dhoni are the five captains to have won Test matches in West Indies. This has to go down as one of the most important Test matches in Indian cricket history. This Test not only marked the debut of Sunil Gavaskar, this match is also famous for India’s first win in the Caribbean.

West Indies in their golden era was a team no opponent wanted to face. Although India was a very strong team at home, it always failed overseas. Winning the toss, the hosts opted to bat first and were bowled out for 214. West Indies batting failed miserably barring Charlie Davis who remained not out at 71. It took India another 26 years to win another Test match in the Caribbean soil. This team under the leadership of Sourav Ganguly was feared worldwide because of their aggressive approach to the game. West Indies under Carl Hooper won the toss and asked the visitors to bat first.

Windies’ bowlers failed to back their captain’s decision as the Indian batsmen made full use of the chance. Rahul Dravid scored a solid 67, which was followed by Sachin’s 117. VVS Laxman also did well to score 69 not out batting with the tail-enders. After getting all out for 339, the Indian bowlers supported the batsmen by getting them all out for 245. This was India’s first win (Jamaica) in West Indies other than Port of Spain. Rahul Dravid was the captain of this team which was relatively new to these conditions.

It took India another 26 years to win another Test match in the Caribbean soil. This team under the leadership of Sourav Ganguly was feared worldwide because of their aggressive approach to the game. West Indies under Carl Hooper won the toss and asked the visitors to bat first.
Windies’ bowlers failed to back their captain’s decision as the Indian batsmen made full use of the chance. Rahul Dravid scored a solid 67, which was followed by Sachin’s 117. VVS Laxman also did well to score 69 not out batting with the tail-enders. After getting all out for 339, the Indian bowlers supported the batsmen by getting them all out for 245. Brian Lara and Carl Hooper ended up scoring half centuries while Javagal Srinath was the pick of the bowlers for his 3/71.
The Indian openers failed again in the second innings and with no support from the upper middle order as it was left to captain Ganguly and Laxman to steady the innings. The left-hander remained not out for a well deserved 75 and was supported equally from the other end by VVSwho scored 74. None of the other batsmen made an impact as they set WI a target of 313 runs. Srinath again ended up as the joint leading wicket-taker along with Ashish Nehra picking 3 wickets. A steady 67 not out from Shivnarine Chanderpaul was not enough as Indians bowled them out for 275. VVS Laxman was awarded the man of the match for his brilliant contribution with the bat in both the innings.

<h4>4. India beat West Indies by 49 runs, Jamaica, 2006:</h4>

This was India’s first win (Jamaica) in West Indies other than Port of Spain. Rahul Dravid was the captain of this team which was relatively new to these conditions.
India batted first and were all out for 200 thanks to some brilliant bowling by Jerome Taylor who picked up a fifer. Rahul Dravid was the lone contributor from the top order scoring 81. West Indies failed to capitalize on the opportunity given by their bowlers and were bowled out cheaply for just 103. Harbhajan Singh was in supreme form and led the attack with his five wickets.
It proved to be a bowling paradise and India were all out for 171 in the second inning with Dravid top-scoring with 68. Correy Collymore made a merry of the Indian batsmen picking another fifer. With 269 to chase in the 4th inning, it was hard work for Windies batsmen. This time, it was the senior talisman Anil Kumble who picked 6 wickets bowling them out them for 219 with that India won the match by 49 runs. Rahul Dravid was adjudged the man of the match and also the man of the series.

<h4>5. India beat West Indies by 63 runs, Jamaica, 2011:</h4>

After another five years, India returned to the same ground where had previously registered a victory. This team was very young and had three debutants which included the likes of Virat Kohli, Praveen Kumar and Abhinav Mukund.
Indians won the toss and scored 246 after their openers failed. It was Rahul Dravid along with Suresh Raina who took the team forward. Dravid made a well paced 40, playing second fiddle to Raina who scored 82. The left-hander also had a good partnership with Harbhajan who scored a well deserved 70. Fidel Edwards was the pick of the bowlers for his team scalping 4 wickets. Although India used only four bowlers, they made sure West Indies were all out for 173. Praveen Kumar and Ishant Sharma picked three wickets each.
In the second innings, Rahul Dravid made 112 as he was the only player who crossed 30. With 326 to win, West Indies could not make use of the start they had and kept losing wickets at regular intervals. They could not score more than 262 and thus lost the first match of the series. Rahul Dravid was the man of the match again. This series was India’s last away Test series win under MS Dhoni.
