Trinidad & Tobago vs Deccan Chargers, Champions T20 League 2009
Deccan Chargers became the champions of the second edition Indian Premier League 2009 after finishing at the bottom of the table in the first. They had lost their first group game to Somerset and had to win this match to stay alive in the tournament.
For T&T, William Perkins was the only one at the top of the order to pass 30 runs. Dwayne Bravo’s bizarre run out combined with the middle order disintegrating quickly didn’t help their case either. Kieron Pollard’s innings of 31 off 14 balls brought back life to T&T innings and his knock got them to a respectable total of 149.
Deccan Chargers, in their chase, had got a very good start, however, three wickets in space of almost four overs pegged them back. After that, the 55-run partnership by Adam Gilchrist and Rohit Sharma kept them in the hunt. Sharma was outfoxed by Samuel Badree and broke a threatening partnership.
Consequently, in the next over, the skipper Gilchrist who had just gotten to a fifty had departed with Pollard taking a sensational catch at deep mid-wicket. Nevertheless, with Scott Styris and Venugopal Rao in the middle and 27 required off the last four, it was Deccan’s game to lose.
Scott Styris was run-out when he dabbed one to extra cover, going for a single. Chargers still held the edge when the equation was down to 13 off 13 balls. Venugopal Rao, who held the key, nicked one which was pitched up on the off stump. Gradually, T&T were left to defend eight off the last over with the ball in Bravo’s hand.
The first delivery went for only a run. Bravo missed a crucial run-out chance in the second ball, with the batsmen scurrying out for the second run. The next two deliveries produced two wickets of that of RP Singh and Fidel Edwards which almost sealed the match for T&T. With 5 required off the last ball, all Suman could manage was a run and Chargers finished with 146, falling three runs short.
This was Bravo, making a splendid comeback after a hapless batting performance and compensating the same with picking three wickets, thus being awarded the man of the match.
