5 IPL talents who got India call-up due to a successful season

Nurturing young Indian talents by giving them exposure to some pressure-cooker situations and big crowds has been the main motive of IPL since its inception. The tournament has never disappointed in terms of the entertainment quotient and perhaps every year, we have seen a young cricketer make his mark in the league. All those years ago, a 20-year-old Rohit Sharma was a huge part of the Deccan Chargers side that lifted the trophy in 2009. Now, he is one of the best limited-overs cricketers in the country and also led Mumbai Indians to three triumphs in 2013, 2015 and 2017. The tournament has changed the fate of so many cricketers over the period. Although the cash-rich league helped Rohit to escalate his image, he wasn’t exactly an IPL product. There are many more youngsters who got a call-up for the national side solely because of their incredible performances in this tournament. Here’s a list of five names who owe it big time to the richest T20 league in the world: 1. Axar Patel Axar Patel of KXIP. (Photo Source: Twitter) The 2014 season was a game changer for Kings XI Punjab, who banked on the likes of Glenn Maxwell, David Miller, George Bailey and Axar Patel to reach the finals. But for Indian cricket, the emergence of a young all-rounder in Axar was a great sign and the Gujarat cricketer eventually made his International debut that year. He was also roped into the World Cup squad in 2015, a rare achievement for a cricketer who just made his debut. With time, he lost his place in the side due to some inconsistent renditions, but when he emerged on the scene, a lot was expected from him. He still has a chance of re-gaining his spot given he can perform well in the Ranji Trophy 2018-19 edition. 2. Ambati Rayudu Ambati Rayudu of Chennai Super Kings. (Photo by IANS) Ambati Rayudu was touted as the future of Indian cricket even before the emergence of MS Dhoni, Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma in Indian cricket when he had a stellar first-class season for Hyderabad in 2002. But he truly made his mark with the Mumbai Indians and eventually, got a call-up in 2012. It took some more time for him to make his International debut and despite scoring a couple of hundreds, he was off the limelight for another couple of years. With an exceptional season for Chennai Super Kings earlier this year, he once again made an entry this year and seems a perfect fit in the Indian side for the number four position. 3. Sanju Samson Sanju Samson of Rajasthan Royals in action. (Photo by: IANS) Not many might remember Sanju Samson’s debut in International cricket as it wasn’t the most memorable one. He didn’t get any further chances to enhance his reputation either, but this list will be incomplete without his presence. Samson has to be one of the finest finds through IPL for Indian cricket. He broke into the scene even before representing India U19 in the World Cup. He was named the best young player in 2013 and is also the youngest to have registered 1,000 runs in the tournament. His debut came shortly after that against Zimbabwe in a T20I, where he registered 19 runs with the willow. He was also named in the ODI squad which travelled to England in 2013. 4. Pragyan Ojha Pragyan Ojha. (Photo by Robert Cianflone-IPL 2010/IPL via Getty Images) In a couple of revolutionary seasons, Deccan Chargers had in the IPL, Pragyan Ojha was an important member. He won the IPL with them in 2009, before winning it twice with Mumbai Indians. After a stellar season with the Chargers in 2009, he won ODI and Test cap very shortly. He’s one of the few IPL talents who made a significant impact in the longest format of the game. The left-arm spinner picked over 100 wickets in the format for India and famously won the Man of the Match award in Sachin Tendulkar‘s farewell game. He has not had a memorable last few years, but with 144 International wickets, he certainly has made his mark. 5. Washington Sundar Washington Sundar of RCB. (Photo Source: Twitter) Roped into the Rising Pune Supergiant side as a replacement for Ravichandran Ashwin in 2017, Washington Sundar was quick to pounce on to the opportunity and he made a lasting impact in a very short time. He bowled brilliantly with the new ball and his economy rate was too impressive for a teenage cricketer. Sundar eventually made his ODI debut in December 2017 and was also awarded the player of the tournament in the Nidahas Trophy this year. Sundar is still a 19-year-old cricketer who has his best days ahead and given he can pull off a few more good performances for the Royal Challengers next season, he might as well become a big part of the Indian side in the years to come.
