The 2007 WT20 game between India and Pakistan is the first thing that flashes through the mind of many cricket fans when it comes to bowl out. The presence of the arch-rivals made the game even more special to the fans of both the countries. However, the aforementioned game was not the first bowl out in professional cricket or the last one. The bowl out took birth in the early 1990s, a fact that is not known to many. But the introduction of Super Over for breaking the Tie put an end to the bowl out.

Here we look at the top five instances of the bowl out in cricket which are not often in the talks:

The England cricket board, in 1991, decided to use bowl out for Tie-break in knockout matches inspired from Football’s penalty shootout format. The bowl out made its debut sooner than expected after the first round game between Hertfordshire and Derbyshire of 1991 NatWest Trophy was abandoned.

Even toss was not possible for the game scheduled in Bishop’s Stortford despite going into reserve day. The game was called off at 2 PM local and the officials decided to host bowl out at 4:15 PM after the rain stopped. Derbyshire first completed their set with only Steve Goldsmith hitting once from his two deliveries. Ole Mortensen, Alan Warner, Frank Griffiths and Simon Base all missed on both turns.

Hertfordshire’s first bowler Andy Needham hit with his first ball but missed on the second. Later John Carr missed his both chances but Bill Merry secured his team’s qualification by uprooting the middle stump with his second turn. Hertfordshire were knocked out in the 2nd round after losing to Warwickshire by 10 wickets.
