It looked like IPL was unlucky for the Indian all-rounder as he never got a great season with the bat as far as his ability and talent is concerned. In the overall IPL career, he has scored 2750 runs in 132 matches with the help of thirteen fifties.
<h3>2. Glenn Maxwell </h3>

Glenn Maxwell, the Aussie international has always been one of the most wanted buys in IPL whenever he is thrown into the auction pool. He came with a reputation of a big hitter in IPL and was picked by Delhi Daredevils as a replacement for injured Travis Birt. But he didn&#8217;t get enough opportunities to show his skills in his debut season.  In the very next season, he was picked by Mumbai Indians at a whopping fee of Rs 5.30 crores. There also he didn&#8217;t get enough chances to prove his worth but got enough amount against his name.
Maxwell&#8217;s breakthrough season came in 2014 playing for Kings XI Punjab, who bought him at 6 crores. He mustered 552 runs in 16 games over a strike rate of 187.75. After 2014, the Aussie international failed to perform as per his potential due to which he was released from Punjab based franchise in 2018. Until then, Maxwell had already earned a reputation of a match-winner in international cricket. So, Delhi Capitals splurged their cash for him and bought for an amount of 9 crores. Maxwell again flopped with the bat in his 4th successive IPL season.
There was a twist kept on the line as KXIP roped Maxwell in their ranks once again in IPL 2020 auction paying a hefty amount of 10.75 Cr. Looking forward to the past performances, he doesn&#8217;t deserve such a fee as the franchises can look for better options available in the auction pool instead of going for Maxwell.

<h3>3. Sourav Ganguly </h3>

Sourav Ganguly is rated as one of the best captains that India has produced in its cricketing history. In the inaugural season of IPL, he was picked by Kolkata Knight Riders at a whopping fee off and around 7 crores. He was given the charge of the team co-owned by Bollywood Superstar Shahrukh Khan in the inaugural season of the cash-rich league. The decision to give him the captaincy of the team turned out to be fatal as KKR ended up on the sixth position.
In the cash-rich league, he never looked a convincing player worth Rs 7 crores and it was his reputation in international cricket due he managed to grab such a whopping fee. He could only score 1031 runs in 40 games for <a href="https://www.crictracker.com/ipl-2020-3-players-who-can-lead-kolkata-knight-riders-kkr-in-dinesh-karthiks-absence/" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">KKR</a> before he was released in the auction pool. There is no doubt over the fact that Ganguly is arguably one of the best batsmen and skipper in the history of cricket. But, IPL never turned out to be his cup of tea where he miserably failed as a player.
In overall IPL career, he scored 1263 runs in 59 games with the help of seven half-centuries. The former player played for Pune Warriors and Kolkata Knight Riders but failed to produce a good show for both the sides before bidding adieu to international cricket.
<h3>4. Pat Cummins </h3>

Another Aussie international in this list overrated player is Pat Cummins. He has earned his name as one of the best fast bowlers across the globe with an ability to score cameos from the lower order for his team. But, in IPL he has so far looked ineffective with the ball and bat. Meanwhile, his injuries have acted as the icing on the cake due to which his franchises had to suffer during the season.
Pat Cummins was bought by KKR back in 2014 at a fee of INR 1 crore. But, he got just only one game in his debut season in which he failed to leave his mark with bat and ball. Later on, he was bought by Delhi Capitals as they splashed INR 4.5 crores to rope him in their arsenal for IPL 2017. He performed good for Delhi-based franchise but not as good as equivalent to his price tag. Even the owners were not happy with his performance and he was released in the auction pool.
Soon, he got another buyer as <a href="https://www.crictracker.com/3-players-royal-challengers-bangalore-backed-but-mumbai-indians-didnt-in-ipl/" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">Mumbai Indians</a>, who bought him adding 90 lakhs more to his previous price tag. He got roped in the side with lots of expectation but his injury again played a vital role due to which Cummins was ruled out from the entire tournament. Meanwhile, MI was well aware of the injury-prone history and they released him in auction ahead of IPL 2020.
And, a bowler, who has grabbed only 17 wickets in 16 IPL games was given a mind-wobbling amount of INR 15.75 Cr by KKR. No one is aware why Kolkata based franchise took such a huge risk of taking Cummins. But, as per his past performances in IPL, he has been paid way too more than his worth in the cash-rich league.
<h3>5. Ben Stokes </h3>

Ben Stokes, a prolific all-rounder equipped with sheer talent is another player in this list of overrated players in the history of IPL. The fans will be shocked but it&#8217;s true. He was picked by the now-defunct franchise Rising Supergiants at a fee of Rs 14.50 crores back in 2017. He emerged as one of the costliest all-rounders in the history of IPL. The fans had expected him to come with flying colours but that couldn&#8217;t prolong.
The right-hand seaming all-rounder smacked 316 runs and grabbed 12 wickets for his franchise. But in the very next season, RPS was discontinued after the arrival of franchises Rajasthan Royals and <a href="https://www.crictracker.com/ms-dhoni-bids-adieu-to-chennai-super-kings-fans-after-ipl-gets-suspended/" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">Chennai Super Kings</a>. In the comeback season, RR roped him at a price of Rs 12.50 Cr.
Now, it&#8217;s been two seasons when the England all-rounder has failed to prove his mantle in the team. He has miserably flopped with the bat and ball. Royals still have their faith on the overrated player and they expect him to come out with brilliance. But so far, Stokes has failed and turned out to be a player that is just a burden on his team based on his price tag. Overall in IPL, he has scored 635 runs in 34 games along with scalping 26 wickets.

A total of eight franchises lavishly spend money in the auction to rope the big players in order to get their hands on the prestigious trophy.
