The Men in Blue have their eyes on the T20 World Cup and they will aim to win the championship this time under the competent captaincy of Rohit Sharma and Rahul Dravid’s coaching. There are currently several players vying for spots in the Indian team, with only a few months until the T20 World Cup 2022 in Australia, which begins in October.
Nevertheless, even though they were named to the squad for the five-match T20I series against the West Indies, there is a chance that some of them won’t really be picked for the mega event. There were a handful of players who performed well recently, but there are also some who have been inconsistent. Without further ado, let’s look at five individuals from West Indies T20I series who might not make it to the T20 World Cup squad.
1. Shreyas Iyer
India has backed Shreyas Iyer continuously, but he has not managed to put up a remarkable performance in the T20I format, except for the fifth T20I against West Indies on Sunday in Florida. Iyer emerged as a prolific performer in the ODI format but could not carry the same momentum in the shorter format.
Speaking of Iyer’s numbers in the T20Is, he has 1029 runs from the 46 matches that he has played, averaging 33.19 – his lowest across all the three formats. Ever since he made his T20I debut in November 2017, his best knock has been that of 74*(44) against Sri Lanka, which came in February 2022.
As India prepares for the Asia Cup 2022, Shreyas Iyer’s performance will be closely watched because tackling the short ball has been a major issue for him. This will help the players get ready for the T20 World Cup and will also help management determine the squad.
