Dhoni has captained many players which includes legends and current superstars of the game.
Though cricket is a game played between 22 yards the emotions run high among the players, the fans witness the action in pressure situations. In such circumstances, the only person who cannot show his sentiments in the field is the captain of the team. A captain has to be shrewd and composed in order to guide the team in the right direction. There is a saying that ‘the captain must lead by example’, and in cricket, it is a fact in every sense of the word.
Indian cricket has produced some of the greatest captains of the game like C.K. Nayadu, Kapil Dev, Sourav Ganguly and MS Dhoni. When Dhoni burst into the scene he was not considered as captaincy material, but as time went by the senior statesmen of the team applauded his cricketing brain and backed him for taking up the role. Since then MSD hasn’t looked back, as he has become one of the iconic leaders of Indian cricket history. Dhoni has captained many players which includes legends and current superstars of the game.
Here are five players who played under MS Dhoni but you didn’t know :
1) Wasim Jaffer, IND 2007
When India played a Test series against the visiting Proteas in 2000 the home team presented the debut cap to a young Mumbaikar batsman, Wasim Jaffer. In his debut series, he was troubled by the SA pacers and was dropped after a poor return of 46 runs in 4 innings. Jaffer returned to the circuit when India travelled to WI for a Test series, and there he scored a sparkling century in the 2nd Test.
He established himself in the Indian set-up with his opening skills and defensive technique, and till 2007 he scored 5 tons which included a brace of double centuries against Windies and Pakistan respectively. As South Africa visited India in 2008 for a 3-match Test series, India had Kumble as their skipper and the opening pair consisted of Sehwag and Jaffer. After a tame draw in Chennai, the teams battled it out in Ahmedabad, and SA thumped India by an innings and 90 runs.
When the teams reached Kanpur for the final Test, Kumble was unfit, and Dhoni took over the captaincy. India won the game by 8 wickets and levelled the series 1-1. During this time Jaffer was having a torrid time with the bat, as he just scored a half-century in 14 innings. Jaffer in his final Test had scores of 9 and 19 respectively and unfortunately, he was never picked after that and played only a single tie under MSD’s captaincy.
