In 2017, he became the most expensive player in the IPL. He was brought by the Rising Pune Supergiant and the franchise shelled out INR 14.5 crores. Four other teams put their bid for him that season, namely Mumbai Indians (MI), RCB, the Daredevils and the Sunrisers.

Stokes didn’t succumb under the price-tag pressure. Stokes racked up 316 runs in 12 matches at an average of 31.60 with a 63-ball 103 against the Gujarat Lions. With the ball, he picked 12 wickets. In 2018, Stokes went to the Royals for a significant amount of 12.5 crores.
