India is probably the second home ground for cricket, after England. A country where a majority consider it to be a religion and its fans to be its devotees. By this, it wouldn’t be wrong to say that the country is a breeding ground for some pure cricket talent.
Out of the 1.3 billion population, only a handful of men and women represent the country at the international stage. When we come to the men’s national team, Virat Kohli sets as an example. Though the Indian captain couldn’t shine his stint with an ICC trophy, he has given the cricketing world some impeccable records.
He has introduced some young and impressive talent to the team, who have displayed some quality performances in the IPL or even First Class tournaments. Some have excelled and made a name in the cricketing world. But while some didn’t have time by their side or couldn’t use the given opportunity to the fullest and have faded away.
Here are 5 players, who debuted under Kohli’s captaincy but didn’t play much:
1. Mayank Markande
Mayank Markande, a young and budding leg spinner, has got limelight after his performance for the Mumbai Indians in the 2018 IPL. He has scalped 15 wickets in 14 matches for the team, with an economy rate of 8.36.
He was also dominant in his First-Class career for Punjab. In his maiden Ranji season, he scalped 29 wickets in just six matches, which made him Punjab’s leading wicket-taker in the 2018 Ranji Trophy season. Through these performances, he got his maiden T20I call and he started his international campaign under Virat Kohli against Australia. But sadly, he couldn’t scalp a wicket in his only T20I match and wasn’t economical enough.
An increase in competition to enter the Indian squad and injuries has hindered the chances of the leggie making a comeback. And the same applies to his IPL stint, where he couldn’t get much chance to display his googlies.
