5 Players who never played a game for CSK after getting a bid in auctions

Chennai Super Kings has been one of the most successful franchises in the Indian Premier League. The MS Dhoni side has qualified for the playoffs every single time in 10 seasons, ultimately winning the final thrice in 2010, 2011 and 2018. The main reason for their success has been the trust in the core team, which mainly comprises of Indian players. ‘Captain Cool’ MSD has been against frequent chopping of the team. While this has led to the team’s success, this has also prevented many players from getting chances. Therefore, let us have a look at 5 such players, who were there in the CSK squad, but not lucky enough to break into the playing XI: 1. Matt Henry Matt Henry of New Zealand. There were rumors that he had been selected because of coach Stephen Fleming since both had played together at the domestic level for Canterbury. Keeping that aside, Henry did not feature in any games for the team. In a team that consisted of a strong fast-bowling attack comprising Ashish Nehra, Mohit Sharma, and Ben Hilfenhaus, it was never going to be easy for then uncapped Henry to find a place in the XI. Surprisingly, the pacer’s rise to fame occurred immediately after the tournament, when he was presented ODI and T20I cap later that year. Since then, he has been a regular part of the team’s core. However, he has played only two IPL games in his career, and that too in 2017 for KXIP. 2. Andrew Tye Andrew Tye. (Photo: IANS) Andrew Tye’s performance in the Big Bash League 2014-15 for Perth Scorchers caught the eyes of IPL franchises. The pacer impressed everyone by scalping 14 wickets in 10 games at an average of 18.35. This helped him fetch a bid of 20 lakhs from the franchise. However, he was injured before the team’s opening game against the Delhi Daredevils. Subsequently, he was ruled out of the whole season and released next time around. He was then picked up by now-defunct Gujarat Lions, where he established himself as a pro-player. Since then, he has been a death-over specialist in the T20 cricket. Though he hasn’t been able to establish himself as a regular in Australia’s national squad, he has done well in domestic and franchise cricket. He was the purple-cap holder in IPL 2018. 3. He has established himself as a force in all three formats of the game. However, this hasn’t been the case in the IPL. Very few people know that he was a part of the CSK squad in 2013, who bought him for 12 lakhs. However, he didn’t feature in any games due to a variety of reasons. Firstly, he wasn’t a renowned player at that time. Moreover, Ravindra Jadeja and Ravichandran Ashwin were also at their peak form then, thereby filling the all-rounders’ slot. Dananjaya got to play his maiden game in 2018 for Mumbai Indians. He went for 47 runs in his 4 overs, making that his first and the last game. However, the Lankan can expect to get more chances this time, since he has impressed in the World Cup and the recent games. 4. Irfan Pathan Irfan Pathan. (Photo Source: Twitter) Irfan Pathan had quite a successful IPL career. He was pretty successful until 2012 before his decline began. However, the pacer did not play only one IPL season till 2017. This was in 2015 when he was a part of CSK. Irfan was bought by the franchise for a sum of 1.5 crores, making him one of the highest buys for the team that season. However, he wasn’t part of the CSK Playing XI that year. Next year, he again played 4 games under MS Dhoni’s captaincy, this time for RPS, but went wicketless. Irfan played his last season in 2017. Since then, he has taken up the role of commentator, presenting various IPL and international games. 5. Baba Aparajith Baba Aparajith. (Photo by Ian Hitchcock/Getty Images) If one were to pick the unluckiest player in the IPL, it has to be Baba Aparajith. He was one of the heroes of India’s Under-19 World Cup campaign in 2012. This brought him under the spotlight, as Chennai Super Kings bought the youngster at the IPL 2013 auctions. However, he was made to warm the bench throughout the season. His fate did not change in the next two years as well. Aparajith remained the part of CSK for 3 consecutive years, but only to sit outside. When CSK was banned, he was picked by RPS, where he again stayed for 2 years without playing. It needs no revision that this batting-allrounder has been unlucky in his career. He went unsold in the last year’s auction. However, he has been in red-hot form in domestic cricket, and one might expect him to get a good bid this time around.
