Australia needed variety in their pace department and that&#8217;s where <a href="https://www.crictracker.com/andrew-tye-promises-to-drink-champagne-out-of-a-shoe-if-kings-xi-punjab-win-ipl-2019/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Andrew Tye</a> could have been a better choice by the selectors. Andrew Tye is a thinking bowler who has a lot of experience, unlike Jhye Richardson. Tye is also a wicket-taking bowler, as he has taken 12 wickets in 7 matches. He has the ability to bowl in powerplay and could have been an option for the Kangaroos in death overs. Tye is excellent with his slower ball variations by which he has outfoxed many batsmen, and can also generate movement on surfaces which aids bowlers.

Steve Smith was always part of CA&#8217;s World Cup plans as his ban completed last month, and he has been the star of Australian cricket from last 5 years. He is an excellent middle order batsman and can be handy with his part-time bowling skills. Till now he has played 108 matches in which he has scored 3400 runs at an average of 42. Before the ban, he was the pillar of Australia&#8217;s batting line-up, but in ODIs Smith has not been a breakout star for the side. He last scored a century two years ago in January 2017 against <a href="https://www.crictracker.com/icc-world-cup-2019-eoin-morgan-calls-pakistan-second-or-third-favorites-to-win-the-tournament/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Pakistan</a>, and his strike rate is also 85 which is reasonable.
After the ban, Smith has been provided with a direct entry to the WC squad but his form has been shaky which is visible from the ongoing IPL and that&#8217;s why Travis Head should have got the nod ahead of the famed right-hander. Travis Head is a decent middle order batsman who has good striking abilities. The selectors could have used his red ball form in the white ball cricket, as he has already played 42 ODIs. His strike rate is above 90 which is the benchmark for the modern day ODI cricketers. Head can also bowl few overs, unlike Smith who will not be able to bowl due to his elbow injury.

<h3>4) Ashton Agar &#8211; Nathan Lyon:</h3>

Nathan Lyon is a superstar for Australia in red ball cricket, but the same cannot be said about his white ball heroics. Lyon is a classic off-spinner but he has not done justice to his reputation of being a strike bowler in ODI cricket. He got his ODI cap in 2012 against the visiting <a href="https://www.crictracker.com/icc-test-championship-pakistan-convince-sri-lanka-to-play-in-lahore-karachi/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Sri Lanka</a> side and in 6 years he has played only a handful of ties. Till now he has played 25 matches but has only 26 wickets in his kitty which is below par. Lyon can be a stock bowler who will provide the captain with an economical spell.
As Australia didn&#8217;t have a primary option after Zampa in the spin department, the selectors choose Lyon because of his experience in the international circuit. Lyon can go for plenty in flat pitches and that&#8217;s why Ashton Agar could have been a smart pick. Ashton Agar is a left arm off-spinner who can bat decently down the order. He has played 9 matches in which he has taken 8 wickets but has not been provided opportunities regularly. Adding Agar to the team will increase the depth of the line-up and he has the experience of bowling crucial spells for his BBL franchise Perth Scorchers.

<h3>5) Josh Hazlewood &#8211; Nathan Coulter-Nile :</h3>

<a href="https://www.crictracker.com/ipl-2019-dale-steyn-joins-rcb-as-nathan-coulter-niles-replacement/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Nathan Coulter-Nile</a> is one of the best fast bowling option for Australia and on his day he can torment any batting line-up. He has the ability to make things happen and has always been a wicket-taking bowler. Coulter-Nile has played 27 matches in the ODI set-up and has 48 wickets to his name. With his height, he can generate uneven bounce on slow pitches which can be a nightmare for batsmen. The Western Australian pacer has the talent to become one of the best fast bowlers in the world if he is completely fit.
The Australian selectors have gambled by picking up Coulter-Nile for the ENG WC as he is an injury prone cricketer and instead of him <a href="https://www.crictracker.com/josh-hazlewood-nervous-over-australias-world-cup-squad-call/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Josh Hazlewood</a> should have got the ticket to World Cup. NCN has a history of breakdowns and in an event like WC, he can be a headache for the team. Josh is a proven match winner and by including him, the team would have got the services of the lethal duo of Starc-Hazlewood. By taking a close at his figures in ODIs where he has scalped 72 wickets in 44 matches, one can say that he is a quality pacer. If the pitches will aid swing and seam then Josh can be the trump card for the defending champs.
It is extremely unfortunate that only 15 cricketers from a country get to represent their nation at the highest level. Like every year the Kangaroos have the squad to win the title, but they have picked a side based on recent performances rather than looking at the need of the team.
